Should explorer groups have officers?

I have been involved with several explorer posts over the past several years and I'm in the process of strating another one with the local fire dept. We are going to combine fire and EMS with a concentration in emergency management.Part of the learning process with BSA Explorers is for the youth to take on responsibility roles in order for them to develop into productve leaders. One of my former police explorers is now also a paramedic and I have another one who just completed the SC Criminal Justice Academy as the student leader. Both of these young people had leadership roles in an explorer post. Go for it they will surprise you. The key to the whole thing is to have adult advisors who will be there to advise properly and let the youth run the post with guidance.

I believe it is a good idea. It does teach leadership and builds good skills you'll need in life. I was just voted in as president and was vice-president of our post before...It can be a challenge sometimes...but fun.

At my post, I am a 2nd Luetenant. We have a Captain, which is the head person, and then we have 1 Luetenant and 1 2nd Luetenant, who aid the Captain. We also have a Secretary/Treasurer who deals with the money and the community.

We do not have jr. officers but we do have two members who take care of the paper work, such as the stats and percentages that are done for juniors each month. At one point it was a discussion among the juniors to appoint a Captain of the Jr. membership, but that has not gone very far. Our jr. membership is 11, but we only have 5 active, the rest are at college.

Kenmedic, you hit it right in the nose.
I was a Fire Explorer Chief when i was in it.
The key to good leadership is a good roll model and someone to learn from!
So, I agree that there should be Officers.

Our group does not have any officers. We seem to get along ok. We basically run on seniority right now. But, we are thinking about the option of officers way back in our minds.

Infact, of speaking of this. Does anybody have in writing the duties/responsibilities of their posts officers? Because I am interested in my post starting officers instead of running on seniority. If you do have the duties in writing, you can PM me and we can talk about me obtaining a copy. Thanks.
