This is a subject I'm sure most Departments encounter. Our department has a membership of around 30 firefighters/emts,The problem is out of these 30 about 10 - 12 are pretty much doing it all,The run sheets have the same members responding to calls, The meetings you see the same people. My question to you is...Is it fair for the guys and gals who keep the place going to let these DEADBEATS get away with the bare minimum of what they are required of?I realize that everyone goes through a lifestyle change, and its hard to just boot them out when there are recruitment problems, most of these guys have more than 10-15 years of service and have been like this from the beginning. If everyone would pitch in and do a little that would mean less work for the ones already doing it.Also thrers a whole lot more to a fire department than just fighting fires.please give me your opinion on this Thanks

I think that the problem you have is all too common with all Combo or straight Volunteer Depts. I agree with what your saying for the most part as we too have had the same situation a few times over the past ten years. We have been a combo dept. for a few years now and went through a simular phase when that was implemented as well. All I can say is don't loose sight of the fact that they are volunteers. Not to be on their defense, but consider that first. Now consider the reasons why they may not show. Are they working alot or just plain lazy? Have you talked to the group as a whole to address the concern? Also look at the big picture.. do you have a certain "CLICK" that hangs together? I do know that people don't tend to feel comfortable or want to participate when they feel like an "outsider". Another thing I've noticed over the years is that that some folks just don't seem to have any responsibilities other than just hanging around the station, and of course then they will always be the ones doing the work! Do your Officers have any suggestions? Pull each person aside individualy and use a little constructive critisism on a professional level as this may address the situation to your advantage! Start pulling gear as a last resort.
Just some ideas.. hope it helps..

Well, it sounds like TD read that one right out of the NFA's Recruitment and Retention classroom study guide. Why is that? Because he's right! Each issue he raised contributes to the retention of members.
We are implementing a long term incetive program in our town (combo department). The contribution, however, is based upon one's call response and training. You can be on the role, but, we are only contributing to the retirement of those who actually do the work.
