I am a new volunteer at my local FD. My plan is to become certified as both a FF and EMT, but it will take up to a year. I am currently working out 4-5 times a week to get in better shape. Are there any specific exercises that I can do to build my upper body strength? I have access to free weights and machines. I run on the treadmill for cardio.

Thanks for any advice,
Laura

There is an excellent book I recommend you purchase, "Getting Stronger" by Bill Pearl. It is the most comprehensive weight training book I have found. It may also be in your best interest to go to a club and get a professional/an experienced friend to show you proper technique. The last thing you want to do is get hurt. Plus you want to get in the best shape as soon as possible. If you want to work on a specific weakness I could make some suggestions. That was my occupation prior to firefighter. My e-mail address is onestop@hfx.eastlink.ca, just drop me a line.
