I have always wondered when the first female joined a fire department. The main reason I wonder is because my grandmother joined the fire department in 1962. Does anyone know of any earlier? Just wondering. My family has hand many females belong to the same company my grandmother (20+ years) my mother (18 years) my sister (8 years) and my wife (10 years).

On Eureka Fire Department, I am the first female. I joined on October 17th, 2000. I'm just an Explorer, but I'm gonna stick with it if it kills me.

On one of the other topics I mentioned that Trinidad FD, to the north of us, was entirely female from 1940 to 1970. It's a fishing town so the guys were all out on the boats most of the year. Neccecity is the mother of invention, I guess.

My grandmother and two aunts were firefighters during WW2 while most of the men were off to war. The town had no problem appointing them, but the state never approved their applications.

There are records here in NJ showing women have been in the fire service since the Civil War - again due to the manpower shortages.

I think around 10 years ago.

The first was 1987, she was in for 5 years.

The second (to stay past probation) is me and I hold the record with 10 years this coming September.
