In my volunteer department, I am the only female firefighter also. It gets hard sometimes being the only female but, I consider all the male firefighters like my big brothers.

First one came in in '79, she was all by her lonesome for ten years (in a dept of over 500) and now we have ten in the field, with two more in the training academy.

At present time, we have 6 female members. One is a junior member, two are EMS responders only, there are two that have turnout gear, and are considered firefighters, but they do not do interior firefighting, by their own choice of course. We've had several female firefighters over the years. Two interior firefighters are previous members, both of which I'd go into a fire with, with out a second thought. One of our former members saved the life of one of our officers several years ago inside of a house. I have absolutely no problem with female fire fighters, I must clarify one of my earlier comments, There are many male fire fighters that I have second thoughts about going in with. I go by ability, not gender when picking good fire fighters. Many women I know are more level headed than many men I know, and I'd choose them over any man to be my partner on the line!!

In my volunteer FD, there are 5 women in our rescue company and one woman in an engine company. This year we installed our first female captain. I believe she's the first female captain to be installed on Long Island.

In my Career Dept. Me and one other female out of 108 Combat Firefighters. Lately, everytime we have a few women testing one or two do not make it through the written test the rest didn't make it through the physical agility test.

In my Volunteer Dept. 3 out of 16. At one time we were up to 7 out of 18.

In our paid department of 483 uniformed personnel, we have one female battalion chief, four female lieutenants (one female captain resigned about a year ago after finishing her PhD), and I'd guess (without actually counting from the roster) about twenty female firefighters.

Out of a total of about 30 firefighters (including officers), we currently have 5 female firefighters and 3 female firefighter cadets. All of our female ff's perform interior attacks. We have the most female firefighters in our county.

I can proudly say that I was one of the first and have recruited the most women in my 4 1/2 years of service.

Over the years, it was usually just one female who was an EMT. Currently we have 4 female EMT/FF who are fairly active.

Currently, there is only 1 active in one of my towns and she was hired as a career firefighter about 4 years ago.
My other town, I only know of 1 which is a recent volunteer firefighter. I'm still learning that department.

Approx. Stats on the first town:
Line FF:80
Line Officers: 18
Support/Admin Staff: 25
Volley FF:20
Area: 28 square miles
Pop: 92000

In my hometown department, we have three assigned to companies(two of which are in my company) and one that is our PIO. In my paid department, there are currently none. There was previously one female FF/paramedic before I hired on. In my volunteer dept, I know I can trust two of the women is fireground operations, the other lady has only been with us about 3 weeks, but she seems like she will be a good firefighter.

We have several one is an Assistant Fire Chief and is the Assistant CHief of the COunty EMS as well. My STation Captain and LT are women. I would say we have a good 10-25 women fire and EMS members. They do a very good job and I have tried to talk our Asst Chief into running for Chief, but she stepped back to allow her husband to.

I am presently the only female firefighter in this department of approximately 40 total. I am the first female officer here, my function is fire prevention. I've been here for 4 months. I came from a department of over 60 firefighters, 4 of them were female. I have over 20 years in the fire service and started in the late "70's" as the first female firefighter in a small town in Ohio.

I highly recommend this job, as I'm sure most of you do! ;)
If I may be of assistance to those just starting their career, please let me know.

Be safe out there.

As it has just been very terribly illustrated, buy the untimely deaths of 2 "FEMALES" at the Thirty Mile fire in Washington state. You don't belong out on the fireline, stick to handing out bandaids& drinks. The other 2 firefighters that also lost their lives in that incident did so because they were trying to protect those who shouldn't have been there in the first place.I sincerly morn the loss of anyone, but let's stop being politically correct, lives are at stake.God rest their souls, and grant them peace.Amen

Coralee

Do not lump us all into the same category. Many MEN don't belong on the fireground either because they are incapable of doing the job. People with a poor attitude or a discriminatory attitude do not belong on the fireground either. I don't care if you're a MAN OR A WOMAN- if you're a firefighter you'd better be able to do the job.

This isn't about being "POLITICALLY CORRECT" in addition to being strong enough to do the job, having the ability to pull your weight and work hard a good firefighter also has to be a "smart" firefighter.

I think I echo the sentiments of many female firefighters when I say that in general the women in the fireservice have to work harder and be tougher than the guys because we are constantly having to prove ourselves to men like yourself. I'm sure you don't know the women who are posting here, and you certainly haven't seen any of us work so don't judge us.

gostrdr6
07-27-2001, 01:26 PM
Your first post said it all...One of your women is on 6 month leave. Why????because she is "PREGNANT".Because of that she can't do her job,and some "REAL" Fireman could die because she wasn't there to do her job.Yes it's all about being about "POLITICALLY CORRECT".Just like the Canadian Goverment trying to take away your right to have guns.Lets "STOP" the stupidity

MrFreeze
07-27-2001, 05:25 PM
Well gostrdr, maybe you could enlighten all of us, and tell us what a REAL firefighter is. Or maybe you could tell us what kind of dept. (if you actually are a firefighter) you work in that someone being on leave would be an excuse for command to make a decision that would get somebody killed. You're right we need to STOP the stupidity. Tell ya what, how 'bout if you start...

well, well mr.freeze your profile says it all.F.D. test taker?????You haven't even been on the "job" yet.Just the term firefighter is politicaly correct. We used to be called "FIREMEN",but you can't use that term anymore.Just like Policeman, or mailman.Their just not fashionable anymore.Oh and by the way,I have 20yrs in service, retired now from injuries recieved on the job.

MrFreeze
07-30-2001, 03:18 PM
I'm fine with a ****ing match. First of all, get a sense of humor. Rumor has it that less than 1% of people that test get hired. My profile is a play on that, but it was obviously either too deep or too sarcastic for you to comprehend. Because I've been on the job. Lemme ask you this: Did you find your dream job? Cuz until I do, I'll still take tests. Maybe political correctness ****es you off. Maybe you live under a rock, I don't know. But here's my thoughts: Firemen are still firemen. We used to call 'em firemen. We used to make black people use different water fountains and not let women vote. Things change. Some good, some bad. It apparently bothers you that fireman has become firefighter. It's semantics. I'm still waiting for you to answer my questions...

This message is directed towards JEMFWFD and gostrdr6. First of all let me ask both of you, Do you treat your mother and/or your wife with the same disrespect for women you are displaying here? If not for women there are many things in this world you would you do without. First of all you would be non-existant. As for the female FF on leave due to pregnancy, she should be commended on bringing a child into this world, especially to live among people with your level of intelligence. Also I don't quite see where there is any slack that should be taken due to the fact that she is on leave. There should be somebody else that would replace her duties. It is people like you who have lowered our society into what it is and what it believes is politically or morally correct. For all the females in the fire service, they must work twice as hard as any male in their position due to the fact that they must try twice as hard to prove themselves, and even once they have been proven it is co-workers like you who still try and make their lives difficult. There are many women in this world who I am sure could out do you anytime of the day. gostrdr6, you say you are retired due to injury received in the line of duty, was that at the hands of a woman or a man???

Thank you for avoiding my questions twice. I don't have to label you as a bigot; you're doing it for me. I was only making a comparison of social paradigmatic shifts that have occurred in the last century. I simply want to know what you think a REAL firefighter is. And if someone being on leave is an excuse for command to get someone killed. What I'm hearing from you is that the pregnant firefighter is on leave, therefore someone will have to pick up the slack. Which is true, as it would be if anyone was gone, regardless of the reason. But I'm also hearing that in order to be missed, that same firefighter had to pull HER weight prior to being on leave. Since you think that, I guess you're not so bad after all...

This post iis directed to: JEMFWFD & gostrdr6

MAN! You got allot of B****. My company presently has 4 very active female members. 3 of them which are Sr. Members and myself, a Jr until December. You REALLY need to grow up! Like I said in another post,

"You don't have to prove anything to anybody. Just do your best and enjoy what you do. Love it. There's always gonna be people who don't like you, and on the other hand, there's always gonna be people you don't like. It's a rough field."

People have to wake up and realize that the man's helmet isn't any different than that of the female... nor is the job of the female in this field any different than that of the male. We have to take the same classes don't we? Pass the same tests don't we? Does your company have a his & hers ladder set or something? GROW UP!

I try to work from the motto whenever I'm around my guys: "First, worry about you, then those who are dressed like you, then comes everyone else." I wonder, what do you think of yourself? What criteria do you use to rate yourself? Then, I wonder, what does this make your brother AND sister firefighters think of you? and lastly, Does your surrounding community know how you feel about your fellow firefighters and what does that make THEM think of you? Instead of worrying about what you think about others, worry about what you and everyone else think about yourself.

*THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL ME WITH ANY PROBLEMS.*

We have about 85 women in a dept of about 400-500. And only about 11 are fire fighters including me. We are volunteer, and I love it. I can pull my own weight but the guys still love to be over protective in and out of a fire, but they don't stop me from doing my job which is great. I have a great crew of 5 guys and lonely ol me. But it is a blast. Wouldn't want to be doing anything else.

I am the 1st and only female on my paid volunteer dept. I am an interior attack firefighter and love doing it. It was a challenge at first to get the guys to accept me. Since I have been doing this for 7 years before I moved here, I was already trained and once I proved myself a little everything was great. My Department has had four women since I joined, 2 have moved, 2 are still with us. I will go with either of them, before I would go with Mr. Freeze or anyone else that thinks that women can't do the work. They are good firefighters! They are trained the same as men, our women don't back down for a fight, fire or otherwise!

I read all of the things that you all have to say,you all talk about doing the job.I KNOW just how many females there are in the FDNY,and not ONE is on the pile in downtown. No pictures of lady firefighters out there doing the job,all you ever see are images of "FIREMEN"doing what they have always done.Look at the list of the missing their all guys, not 1 girl.Didn't any of them respond to the call,or did they just ignore the cries of the wounded.Something to think about

On my Fire/Rescue Dept ... we have 2 Female FF's (me being one and another that only shows up sometimes) ... and 2 Rescue only ... out of oh I dunno 20 people max .. very small town in S. New Hamp ... but I love it .. eventhough all the guys consider me like one of them .. they are still fun and great to have around, better than feeling like I shouldn't be there. (dept I'm on when I'm up at school)

Back home .. I get the impression that the guys don't want to see girls around the firehouse .. as far as I know my town doesn't have any female FF's and the other vol dept that I was kinda on for a little while only had one female FF ... we have a lot of attitude there though ... from the guys that is ... they are not very welcoming and I think it turns some people away ...

gostrdr6--You need to watch the news alittle closer, I seen the same news clip 3 times from 3 agencies, and they all showed a male and female firefighter helping each other over the piles of rubble in NYC.
I personally worked with alot of very nice and very well trained female firefighters. One which was assigned to my heavy rescue, and I can PROUDLY say, that had it not been for that female I would not be posting this message today!! She (being half my size)pulled my unconscious butt from a fully involved warehouse fire, after we had BOTH been struck by a ceiling beam, and also pulled out the worker we were lookin for, despite her own injuries. And had it not been for the 2 als females working on our medic unit, her efforts would have been in vain.
These women had nothing to prove to any of firefighters on the scene that day(especially me)!! We all went through the same training and were trained and treated equally(and still are)!!! I am also able to continue to do this job which I so dearly love!!

I am the only female on my career department. I have been on the job 14 yrs. I currently hold the rank of Captain. We have a total force of 23, 21 in suppression, 2 in admin (that would be the Chief and Fire Marshal).

I was the first female to ever pass the entry level agility test. There have been many females who have tested since then, only one other passed the PAT. Her holier than thou attitude kept her from getting hired. That was in 92 or 93. No other females have passed the PAT since then.

Have a good day!

We have two female firefighters in our paid department. I started fighting fire in 1987 and never looked back. Our other female is at a rookie level, but she is strong and smart. I look forward to seeing her move up through the ranks as I have during these rewarding years. My department has 40 very proud full time firfighters.
We are devestated with the loss of our brothers and sisters in New York. Even accross the miles the sadness is non the less. We are proud of all of them who sacraficed their lives.
Please ignore GOSTRDR6, he just wants to get people worked up. He does not desrve our attention. GOSTRDR6 does not reflect the true spirite of a firefighter.

There were two women on the department when I joined, but one quit to go to school and another for maternity. For the last three years, it's been just me.

Women in the Fire Service, Inc. has a great interview with FDNY Lt. Brenda Berkman here (http://http://www.wfsi.org/BerkmanWTC.html)

stay safe, everyone

We currently have 4 female members out of a 25 member volunteer department. They're just part of the team, and it is pretty much that way with most volunteer departments in this part of the county.

We are currently taking a lot of flak from one nearby department over our having women in the service. It heated up last summer when we promoted a woman to engineer.

It's getting better out there, but there are still islands of bigotry!

I work in a busy Dept.(12,000+calls) with 13 females out of 130 uniformed personnel. Some of those female firefighters have a bigger set of balls then some of the male firefighters that I've been with in burning buildings.

My department is a mix of paid/volunteer firefighters. Of the 16 paid "guys", I am the only woman, and of the 16 active volunteers, there is one female emt. Not a bad ratio from some of the others I have seen, but it leaves room for improvement!! We have proven ourselves to be as able as our brothers, but we are still fighting for respect. :(

I just wanted to say a special thank you to the men in this group who have spoken up in support of the women here at the forum, at your own stations or elsewhere. It is unfortunate that the stupidity that pelages some individuals cannot be stamped out.
However, please keep in mind that your continued support will at least hopefully keep that type of dogma and stupidity from further spreading.

Out of over 1,100 employees we have a total of 17 women on my department who have each been through a 16 month fire academy and served time in suppression.

Support
1- Assistant Fire Marshall (Chief)
1- Public Education Officer (Major)
1- Human Resources (Major)
1– EMS QA Officer (major)
1- Assistant Safety Officer (Lt)

Suppression
1– Fire Major
1- Fire Lt.
10- Fire Corprals

* 9 of the above are also paramedics while all others are also basic EMT's per job requirement of our department.

We have several female dispatchers who were hired on when our dispatch center was civilianized. None of them have ever worked out on the rigs before.
