No, Anyone on my dept that wants to drive must meet certain qualifications.
21 yrs old.
Member for at least 1 yr.
min. 1 yr level 1 certified.
No violations within 3 yrs.
They must also take our classroom course, have the min hours of training on pumping and other onboard equipment, and after all that, successfully complete an obstical course and be approved by the training or equipment officer.

Generally, folks must have completed their 1 year probationary period. Then only the ones that meet all NFPA 1002 qualifications, including an 80+ hour pump operators course, 16 hour EVOC class, pass a departmental multi-disciplinary practical "relief driver" evaluation/evelutions by the training staff, go through a formal training period for the peice of apparatus you will be operating, including driving, pumping, SOP's, EOG's, Training Standards, check-outs and other activities (may take 40 hours or more). And then only if the company officer is comfortable with your driving, safety, and competence. Folks that do complete the above receive an additional pay incentive for performing Driver/Engineer functions. Who wants to DRIVE?

Everyone on my dept is trained to drive and operate all apparatus. The engineer and the back up engineer are the ones who will normally drive.
