AT SOUTHAVEN FD WE RECEIVE OUT OF RANK PAY WHEN WE MOVE TO ANOTHER RIDING ASSIGNMENT (FF>DRIVER, DRIVER>LT., LT.>CAPT., FF>AMBULANCE DRIVER, ETC.) YOU RECEIVE PAY EQUAL TO THE POSITION YOU ARE FILLING. HOW DO OTHER DEPTS. HANDLE THIS?

Do you receive the out of rank pay for the whole time you are "out of rank?" Our old contract required us to actually act as the officer on a scene to get the "out-of-class" pay. Our new contract requires pay at the higher rate whenever you are assigned that position. Also, if you are called back to work while off-duty, the call-in crew may also have a member receiving "out-of-class" pay if no officer is in the called-in group.

Hey Terry,
We are discussing this subject in our union talks with the city. We are trying to make it, that if you are a FF and you move up to a drivers postion, you will be paid a drivers salary for the time you are doing the job. And this would be the same for all upgrades.
Have a good day and be safe.

Our union agreement calls for firefighters who act as a Captain to get 5% more per hour when they are in the position for 4 or more hours at a time.
We have contractual language for Acting Officer - if FF is acting LT. for 12 or more of the 24 he gets the difference between rank for the day. Same with FF to Capt. if no LT. is working. Also the LT. gets the difference if he is Acting Capt. for 12 or more. We currently don't have a drivers position - only 26 on the whole dept.

In Marlborough, the only out of grade pay is for a Lieutenant being an acting Captain. We get paid at the Captain's rate for the tour of duty.

Our contract says that out-of-rank pay will be paid for the actual hours worked. So if you get two weeks of Acting Captain pay you get captain's rate for 120 hours, if it's a 3-day week and a 2-day week. If it's two two-day weeks you get 96 hours, and 10 hours of blueshirt pay to make up the 106 hours the contract says we are to be paid 26 times per year.

Our drivers and FF's get the same pay,if a company officer is off the senoir person on the piece moves into the officers seat and receives Lt's pay for the whole shift, it dosen't matter if they are replacing a Lt. or a Capt. they get Lt's pay. If a Capt. moves up and fills in for a B/C which is the shift comander (O/D) the Capt. receives B/C pay. This is all covered under our contract!

In our contract we get the "acting officer" pay for the amount of time the FF is in that position. If it is one hour or the whole day. If you do the job of an officer and take on the responsibility you should get the benefit of the pay grade.

We get out-of-rank pay for the time a person performs the other job. We call it "step up" pay; the only "difference" is that our pay structure has several "steps" for in each rank; the acting whatever person only gets the 1st step of the higher class pay. (whereas a senior driver with 10 yrs or so will be drawing pay at step 3 or 4...for example)

If we ride out of grade (Captain or Driver) we get 1st step of their paygrade as long as it's over 12 hours out of the 24. They've pulled some funny moves with switching people before they get to 12 hours a couple of times but it doesn't happen like that very often. My driver got promoted to captain this fall and since we're also short drivers I've ridden out of grade nearly every shift as a driver for a few months. Besides the money(114 dollars per shift more)I'm getting some great experience for the promotiuonal test next year.

We get 2 hours regular pay extra if we move up at least 8 hours in a shift.

We get "upgrade" pay for any "acting" position whether it is for 5 minutes or 5 weeks. This occurs when someone of a lower rank is filling in for someone in a higher rank. If I act up as a Captain, I receive extra pay. Our department pays upgrades for Driver/Engineer, Captain, and District Chief. The actual pay is based on percentages over firefighter which is established by state law.
