***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for January 26th:

1906: E-26 was placed in active service (Organized 2/4/1905) in new quarters on the northwest corner of Leadenhall & West Sts, South Baltimore - It is a 2 story brick building on a lot 100'x40', costing $20,065 & the lot $2,434 - They received a new LaFrance Metropolitan Steam Engine - Their 1st Captain was John P. McGuire, a promoted Lieutenant from Hook & Ladder #5 - In 1990(?) they relocated to the former quarters of E-12 (Disbanded 9/5/1988) @ Fort & Riverside Aves, also in South Baltimore - Their former quarters still stands & is occupied by the South Baltimore Homeless Shelter - Medic-5 is also quartered with them. (CHM2*LT.H)

1940: 5 Alarms - Box#1524 - 0404hrs - 205-215 S Bond St - East Of Downtown - Fire involved the 5 story brick Wood Products Company - A blinding snowstorm was in progress as the building was billowing heavy smoke from all openings - BC-2, James F. Courtney, sounded the 3rd alarm immediately - The fire involved the entire building containing millions of feet of seasoned lumber & DC-2, John Steadman, ordered the 4th & 5th alarms sounded - Every firefighter & all the rigs became ice encrusted from the snow & freezing rain while the building was gutted. (TUH)

1963: 4 Alarms - 3900 Pulaski Hwy - East Baltimore - Fire involved Abe's Surplus & several dwellings. (CHM1)

1975: 6 Alarms + Special Call 3 Engines - Box#224 - 2024hrs - 526-530 N Gay St - Old Town Mall (Northeast Of Downtown) - While returning to quarters, Lieutenant Warren Wunder & Members of E-6, observed a cloud of smoke & flames directly up Gay St & radioed ahead for Box#224, Gay & Mott Sts, to be sounded - The Standard Rug & Linoleum Company was on fire, with flames blowing across Gay St - Acting BC-2, Francis A. Dolan, Captain T-1, radioed for a 2nd alarm @ 2031hrs - DC Herbert W. Catterton ordered the 3rd alarm @ 2036hrs, 4th alarm @ 2049hrs, 5th alarm @ 2055hrs, & 6th alarm @ 2059hrs - High winds were blowing near gale force & the fire gained in intensity as the large plate glass windows shattered & fell out onto Gay St - The burning warehouse was stocked full of linoleum rugs, tile, & foam rubber articles - Firefighters struggled to rip off the metal wire protection covering every opening in the fortress like burning building - DC Catterton ordered a 2-10-3 special call (3 engines) @ 2122hrs when the roof caved in, lighting up the Old Town area & becoming a spectacular fire for more than 6 hours - Minor injuries caused by firefighters slipping & falling on the ice encrusted pavement were too numerous to count - An avid fire buff & Box#414 Association member, Marvin L. Edell, a pharmacist who owned the Carter Drug Store next store to the burning building, heard the alarm on his fire call radio @ home & quickly responded, spending the night viewing the firefighters' efforts in keeping the blaze away from his store, which suffered from smoke & water damage - Acting Chief Of The Fire Department Edward J. Schneider said it was one of the most stubborn fires in his memory - The roof collapsed on top of tons of stored oil cloth, linoleum rugs, & related goods, that prevented water from getting to the deep seated fire, forcing a gigantic overhaul operation, with firefighters remaining on the scene for 44 hours - Water Tower #1 (Snorkle) played an important part in extinguishing the large fire & later in overhauling the debris - An added hindrance was torn up Gay St in which rigs got mired down in the mud caused by the rebuilding into a shopping mall. (CHM1*TUH)
