(TUH)
1956: Anne Arundel Co: @ 1700hrs, The Fire Alarm Office was swamped with telephone calls reporting a raging fire @ Arundel Park, a half mile inside of Anne Arundel County on Belle Grove Rd - E's 10 & 26, T-21, Municipal Ambulance #9, & Acting BC-6, John McKinley, Captain E-12, were ordered to respond, although a request from Anne Arundel County authorities had not been received - An oyster roast was being held in the 1 story cinder block auditorium when grease flared up in flames, which seemed insignificant @ the time - Flames suddenly engulfed the entire ceiling of the 60x160 building, burning off the roof as the inside became an inferno - The crowd of 1,175 was turned into a hysterical mob & raced for the exits, several of which were padlocked shut - 10 were killed, all women, who were discovered piled up against 1 of the locked exit doors - The hero of the flash fire was Andrew Brady, 57, a special policeman @ the affair - He had spent 22 years with BCFD, being pensioned in 1943 as Assistant Engineman of E-26 - As the fire began to rage, he stood on a table top, telling the panic stricken crowd to stay calm - He was the last person to come out alive, but even then, it was too late, as he succumbed from the terrible burns all over his body.
