LOS ANGELES, CA:
CIVILIAN FATALITY FIRE:

On Sunday, February 03, 2002 at 1731 Hours (5:31 PM PST), four Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters and two LAFD Rescue Ambulances under the direction of LAFD Task Force 14 Commander Robert Munoa responded to a Civilian Fatality Fire at 1344 East 42nd Street in the Newton area south of Downtown Los Angeles. The first Company to arrive on scene was directed to an 84 year-old woman lying upon a smoldering upholstered sofa within the front room of a one-story single-family dwelling. The woman, who had sustained significant burn injuries, was without vital signs of life. Despite the efforts of bystanders and a quick response by Los Angeles Firefighters, the woman was beyond medical assistance and was declared deceased at the scene. Witnesses state they were alerted to the fire by screams coming from within the residence. Using large bottles of water on the premises, and later assisted by a neighbor with a fire extinguisher, the bystanders gained access to the woman and all but extinguished the fire prior to the Fire Department’s arrival. Fire damage was confined to the vicinity of the sofa, and there were no other injuries. Monetary loss from the fire is estimated at $800 in contents damage, while the cause of this early evening blaze remains under active investigation by Los Angeles Police and Fire Department officials.

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for February 3rd:

1926: 6 Alarms - Box#167 - 2040hrs - Fleet St & Broadway - Fells Point (Southeast Of Downtown) - Fire involved the 3 story Goldenberg Department Store - Flames were shooting through all 3 floors & the roof on arrival of BC-1, Michael A. Lind, who sounded the 3rd alarm @ 2044hrs - #3 Hayes aerial ladder was raised but it was reached by the flames & caught fire before it could be lowered away - The strong gale like winds blew the flames directly across the roof of Broadway Market & threatened to destroy it - Chief Engineer August Emrich sounded the 6th alarm @ 2058hrs - #17 Hayes aerial ladder was positioned against the wall when a civilian jumped on the truck & climbed the up the ladder - Posing with ease @ the rooftop & with flames licking all around him, he took off his coat & heroically fanned it as a Eastern District Patrolman climbed up after him - When the officer reached out to grab him, he jumped off the ladder & plummeted to the sidewalk - Onlookers thought he was dead, but he suddenly got up & started to walk away, then crumbled to the ground with a broken leg - The fire was still blazing brightly @ midnight, the side wall buckled & swayed a moment, just enough time for @ least (30) firefighters to flee, then collapsed, but (3) were trapped in the rubble - Every available firefighter dug into the pile of hot bricks & soon uncovered Firefighters Louis Votta, E-23, William Pierce, E-6, & Frederick Hall, E-11 - They were all injured, but had a miraculous escape from instant death - After an all night battle the fire was extinguished, but firefighters remained on the scene until dusk the next day. (TUH)

1936: 6 Alarms - Box#3121 - 0340hrs - Davis & Saratoga Sts - Downtown East - Fire involved the 4 story brick American Cooperage Company Warehouse - The block long warehouse was filled with reclaimed barrels still containing vapors of alcohol & whiskey, & was burning fiercely - DC-4, John Steadman, sounded 6 alarms in rapid succession - Firefighters were hampered by the 10 degree temperature as water from the hoses turned to ice as soon as it hit anything - The Sisters of Mercy, from nearby Mercy Hospital, kept the firefighters supplied with steaming hot coffee, & 4 hours later only the shell of the structure remained - Ladder Trucks #'s 1 & 16 were so heavily coated with ice that it was impossible to move them - They remained frozen to the ground, with all the aerial ladders still against the burned out shell until afternoon, when Captain William H. Stagge, Repair Shop, drove Reserve E-23 to the scene, raised clouds of steam & thawed out the ice encrusted rigs - It was the last use of a steam engine on any fireground. (TUH)

1965: 4 Alarms - Box#365 - 941 Pennsylvania Ave - Seton Hill (Northwest Of Downtown) - Fire involved a restaurant & bar. (CHM1)

1980: 5 Alarms - Box#631 - 1300 Race St - South Baltimore - Fire involved the 3 story brick Imperial Packing Company. (CHM1)
