*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

CINCINNATI, OH:

CINCINNATI FIRE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
DISTRICT 4

Media Contact:
District Fire Chief Denny Clark
Phone: 352-2344
Date: 02/03/02
Time: 08:38 a.m.

A 25-year-old man narrowly escaped death from a fire in his third floor apartment Sunday morning.

This is District Chief Denny Clark reporting on a fire that broke out in a home in the East Walnut Hills neighborhood this morning. The 911 call was placed by a neighbor four houses away who saw smoke. The first arriving firefighters found a frightened man surrounded by thick dark smoke and calling for help from the front window of an attic apartment at 2545 Ingleside Ave. Members of Ladder Co.23 immediately raised the truck's aerial ladder and brought the man safely to the ground. Following initial treatment and evaluation by paramedics at the scene, he was quickly transported to University Hospital for evaluation of inhalation of smoke. While the rescue was taking place other firefighters forced their way through a locked door and advanced hose lines up three flights of stairs to be met by heavy fire and dense smoke. The fire was quickly extinguished but an estimated $10,000 of damage had already occurred to the structure and contents. A careful investigation revealed that the fire started from a discarded cigarette that had fallen into a couch in the living room and smoldered for sometime until it burst into flames and quickly spread fire throughout the room while the resident slept in an adjoining bedroom. A smoke detector was found in the rubble but the resident does not remember hearing it sound. Had the resident opened the door to the fire on the other side it is likely that he would have been killed by the intense heat and smoke. A quick response by aggressive firefighters saved a life and prevented damage to two other apartments in this three-family home.

Questions may be directed to District 4 Chief Denny Clark at (513)352-2344
