*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***
LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE WITH FATALITIES:
On Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 0835 hours eleven companies of Firefighters, two Battalion Command Teams and four Rescue Ambulances under the command of Assistant Chief R. J. DeFeo responded to a greater alarm structure fire at 1400 South Alvarado Terrace in the Pico Union/Westlake area. First companies on scene reported a large Victorian with fire in the attic. Firefighters using handlines confined the fire to the structure and extinguished the fire in twenty-five minutes. During firefighting operations the remains of a three and five year old male and a four-year old female were discovered in a first floor bedroom. A sixty-five year old female was transported to California Hospital in stable condition with complaints of minor shortness of breath. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is children playing with a cigarette lighter and the loss is estimated at $60,000. ($50,000 to structure and $10,000 to contents).

· Chicago FireHISTORY: for Feb 5, 1923: At 12:40p.m. ENGINE 11 at 10 E. Hubbard St. responded to Box 848 at Chicago Ave & State St. 3 horses pulled their Steamer & 2 horses pulled the Hose Wagon. THIS WAS THE LAST TIME HORSES RESPONDED TO A FIRE IN CHICAGO. When they returned to Quarters a new 1923 Ahrens-Fox (D-11) Pumper was waiting for them and the CFD was completely motorized. At the NYC Firemen’s Monument in Manhattan a tribute to the horses reads: “This tablet is dedicated to the horses that shared in valor & devotion and with mighty speed bore on to the rescue.” [CHGO-18]. 9:30p.m.
