CINCINNATI, OH:

Cincinnati Fire Division
District 4
Media Release

Media Contact: District Chief Keith Burkert
Phone: 352-2344
Date: 2/5/2002

This is District Four Fire Chief Keith Burkert reporting a 2 alarm structure fire in the Oakley section of Cincinnati. Firefighters were alerted on 2/5/02 at 5:54 PM to heavy smoke coming from Nicks Chops & Chasers, 3355 Madison Road. Upon arrival, District Four companies found fire in the kitchen extending through the roof of this 3 story occupied frame restaurant. Firefighters quickly attacked the fire in the first floor, second floor and attic space. With 4 hose lines operating, the fire was brought under control in 15 minutes. Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots.

Occupants were evacuating when fire companies arrived and 1 employee was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Fire damage is estimated at $100,000 and the cause is listed as grease buildup in one of the ventilation ducts over a cooking appliance.

Owner, Mr. Nick Longo, stated that the restaurant may be closed for up to 30 days while repairs are being made.

Questions may be directed to DC Burkert at 352-2344.

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for February 6th:

1967: 2 Alarms - Box#7323 - 0407hrs - 2707 Edmondson Ave - West Baltimore - Fire involved the 1st & 2nd floors of a 2 story brick rowhouse - There was (1) female civilian fatality - The adjacent dwellings @ 2705 & 2709 received smoke & water damage. (TGA)

1974: 10 Alarms - 6-6-528 & 4-4-52 - 1801hrs - 410-418 S Hanover St - Otterbein (South Of Downtown) - A civilian on the 9th floor of a downtown skyscraper, saw through the freezing rain swept air, that the roof of a large building in the vicinity of Conway St was on fire - E-15 & T-2 were dispatched on a silent alarm @ 1801hrs - Captain Frank Rainey, E-15, ordered Acting Lieutenant Walter F. Schultheis, T-2, to radio for Box#528 to be sounded @ 1805hrs - The old Ward's Bakery, 410-418 S Hanover St, a 6 story brick vacant warehouse, was torched by arsonists, the top 2 floors fully involved with flames leaping high in the air as firefighters rolled in - BC-5, Joseph Berman, radioed for the 2nd alarm @ 1810hrs, DC Edward J. Schneider ordered the 6th alarm @ 1816hrs & positioned Water Tower #1 (Snorkle) @ the east end of a similar 6 story warehouse, the former Heywood Wakefield Furniture Factory, to cut off the raging flames, which most likely would have consumed the adjoining structure - Lieutenant Francis A. Kemper & members of E-2, led off from the nearest hydrant @ the southeast corner of Hanover & Conway Sts & set up their monitor pipe - When Firefighter Gary Bell attempted to charge the hose line from the hydrant, he discovered that the top stem had been sawed off, presumedly by the same persons who lit the fire minutes earlier - Methodically, the bright flames dropped floor by floor to the ground level, when suddenly the top of the south wall fell onto the roof of 420 S Hanover St, followed by the front wall which fell outward into Hanover St - Chief of Department Thomas J. Burke ordered a 2nd alarm (8th alarm) from adjacent Box#52 @ 1825hrs & a 4th alarm (10th alarm) @ 1854hrs, as the old building burned like a torch - A man who identified himself as a security guard, rushed up to Captain John R. Frazier crying that another guard was trapped in the raging inferno, but before risking any firefighters' lives in a fruitless search, Captain Frazier checked out the story quickly & found it to be false & ordered the man's arrest on charges of arson - While responding on the 6th alarm, E-47 collided with an automobile @ Washington Blvd & Fremont Ave, disabling the rig, but luckily there were no injuries - Later, demoliton crews leveled both the burned & unburned 6 story warehouses. (TUH)

1993: 2 Alarms + Task Force(E's 13 & 52, & T-25) - Box#856 - 1630hrs - 3300 Keswick Rd - Hampden (North Of Downtown) - Fire involved an apartment building & damaged an adjacent dwelling & tavern - (5) families were made homeless & no injuries were reported. (TGA)

Baltimore MD Fire Dept

Fund raiser for Box 414 Club's new Coffee Wagon. Limited edition print.

Last year Box 414 started a new coffee wagon fund. We commissioned a Lieutenant in the D.C.F.D. to do a drawing of old Engine 6's quarters, which is now the Box 414 museum. This is the same person that had quite a few copies of his work at the last Firehouse flea market. He does quality work.

Box 414 is now offering an outstanding color reprint of the drawing. They are selling for $35.00 each, with all proceeds going to the new coffee wagon fund.

This is a numbered, limited, signed edition of the original drawing. It would be a great addition to anyone who collects B.C.F.D. memorabilia.

Eddie Schwartz, the president of Box 414, who is also the son of former Battalion Commander Freddie Schwartz formerly of the old 11th Battalion, and I are picking them up this Sunday, and they will be ready for sale, starting next Monday, February 11, 2002.

If you are interested or know of anyone that is interested, please contact me at (410) 239-8570 or email me at foute6ret@aol.com and I will see that you get one.

Thanks for your time,
