***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for February 7th:

1904: On a cold, cloudy, & windy Sunday morning, National Automatic Alarm #854 sounded 1048hrs for the John E. Hurst Company, on German St (Now Redwood St), between Hopkins Pl & Liberty St, Downtown - The 6 story brick, iron front wholesale dry goods & notions warehouse was deserted - Captain John Kahl alighted from Hose Wagon #15 & read the clock like annunciator on the wall, & it indicated BASEMENT - It was activated by a thermostat - It was surmised that a lighted cigarette was blown or dropped into a 2" missing glass eyelet hole in the sidewalk, where it fell in & ignited cotton goods stored in the basement - Entering the building with the chemical line & hose pipe, the firefighters heard a rumbling noise & started to back out of the entrance door - Then, a terrible explosion shook the building & the firefighters landed outside on the sidewalk - Captain Malcolm W. Jordan, Salvage Corps, sounded Box#447 @ 1051hrs, & a moment later District Engineer #5, Lewin H. Burkhardt, sounded the 4-2's signal from Box#414, & special called E's 17, 18, & 25 - Suddenly, another explosion blew the roof off & the building literally fell apart, falling walls demolishing the Clapp & Jones Steam E-15, which was being hooked up to work from the hydrant on the northeast corner, & crushing to pieces #2 Hayes aerial ladder truck in front of the building - The Hale Water Tower was being drawn into position when the horse "Goliath", hearing the blast, galloped away @ once - His action saved the rig, but Goliath was trapped under the rubble & injured - The 12MPH wind spread the fire in all directions, except westerly, & @ 1140hrs it was nearing Hanover St - The big wooden cornices of the old buildings did much to spread the fire - One could look down the streets & see the fire jumping from cornice to cornice - The dreaded flight of burning brands ignited the roofs, made of tar & gravel, which helped the cause along - Last, but not least, the ornamental cast iron fronts, being the vogue of the day, when the hot blasts hit them, metal frames & glass simply buckled & fell, exposing the contents of the buildings which went up in flames in a flash - After 2 square blocks were burned over, the firefighters were physically exhausted - Chief Engineer George W. Horton decided to appeal for aid & ordered Secretary Pinkey W. Wilkinson to telegraph other cities for help - Chief Horton started up Baltimore St, when @ Liberty St he was shocked & burned by a falling electric trolly wire - He was carried to E-23's quarters, & District Engineer #2, August Emrich, assumed charge of the fire for the remainder of the next 2 terrible days - When the fire reached Charles St, the plan was to dynamite & stop the progress of the flames - Several buildings were dynamited, but this only help spread the fire - Buildings on both sides of Fayette & Baltimore Sts were burning, & German & Lombard Sts were a river of fire, even the wooden paving blocks & asphalt street bed were burning - As darkness fell, the 10, 12, & 16 story concrete fireproof office buildings were burning from cellar to roof & not even wide open spaces between some buildings could not stop the fire - A total of 771 firefighters with 33 Steam Engines, Hose Wagons, & a hook & ladder truck arrived from out of town - Roland Park, Highlandtown, & Westminster, came by road, Sparrows Point by trolley car, & the remainder by railroad flat cars, they being Relay, 1, Saint Denis, 1, Washington, 5, Philadelphia 7, Annapolis, 3, Wilmington, 4, York, 2, Chester, 2, Harrisburg, 1, Phoenixville, 1, Altoona, 1, Columbia, 1, New York City, 10, (the most & longest afar), & Atlantic City sent 90 men without their apparatus - When the call for help was received in New York City, BC John F. Howe & 10 Steam Engines Companies, complete with steamer, hose wagons, & firefighters, along with H&L #5, were ordered to respond to the Liberty St Ferry for the City Of Baltimore was on fire - The firefighters found the ferry boat "City Of Baltimore" safe @ the dock with not a sign of fire anywhere, & after a search they prepared to return to quarters - It was a needless delay of an hour when they were reinformed & entrained for Baltimore - Due to the great weight of the rigs, the railroad cars developed hot boxes several times & had to be stopped each time to cool them down - After 10hrs, twice the running time, they arrived in Baltimore almost starved - Invited to go with them was the famous buff, Dr. Harry M. Archer, who paid out almost $100 out of his own pocket to feed them - @ 2400hrs, the National Guard was activated to prevent looting, & 2,000 soldiers & sailors activated for duty - The wind changed to the south & the flames whirled around towards the financial district, Pratt St & the Harbor Basin - Long before daylight, while the fire was spreading through the financial district, there was panic in East Baltimore - The scene from Caroline St to Broadway & Eastern Ave saw many residents piling their household goods on the sidewalks or they were wildly throwing bedding, clothing, furniture out of upstairs windows - The firefighters' strategy was designed to keep the fire from jumping the 75' wide Jones Falls - Everyone from the District Fire Engineers to the County Volunteers felt that if the fire got across the Jones Falls, a 75' wide stream, East Baltimore would be doomed - 37 engines were ordered to Jones Falls from Baltimore St to the Block St drawbridge - The bridges spanning the Falls were used as vantage points for the engines to draw water out of the Falls - The fight was so determined that 1 engine company refused to get off the burning Lombard Street bridge until it seemed ready to collapse - The fire approached the Falls, consuming large warehouses & stored lumber along the west bank - Flying brands set several large fires to the east of the Falls & several buildings were gutted, but firefighters were able to prevent these fires from getting out of hand - After burning for approximately 30 hours & destroying 1,526 buildings in an area of 140 acres (more than 70 blocks), the fire was officially declared under control @ 1700hrs, Monday - The fire had been fought by 1,231 firefighters (+ about 400 unattached volunteers), 57 engines, 9 hook & ladder trucks, 2 hose companies, 1 fireboat, 1 revenue cutter, 1 police boat, & many tugs - Of these, Baltimore itself furnished 460 firefighters, 24 engines, 8 hook & ladder trucks, & numerous boats - The Baltimore FD lost 1 steam engine, 1 hook & ladder truck, & 29,000' feet (nearly 6 miles) of hose - The total amount of hose in use was more than 91,000' & officials estimated that 70,000,000 gallons of water was used to douse the fire - No lives were lost & there were no reported serious injuries, although burns were plentiful & mostly unrecorded - E-6's quarters in Oldtown was transformed into a temporary Infirmary to treat the injured firefighters - A FDNY Firefighter, Mark A. Kelly, E-16, contracted pneumonia while fighting the fire here, returned home, & died within the week. (TUH*BA*HAW)

1920: 6 Alarms - Box#14-9 - 1855hrs - East Falls Ave, Stiles, Fawn, & President Sts - Inner Harbor East (East Of Downtown) - Fire involved the Horstmeier Lumber Company Storage Building - Starting in the middle of the huge plant, the fire ate its way directly across the building & through the roof - In the next 30 minutes, 6 alarms were sounded, the 1st time since the new Code of Signals took effect - The Fireboats Cataract & Deluge turned their Morse deckpipes on the fire from Jones Falls, & land companies surrounded the other 3 sides of the millwork factory with hoselines - After an all night battle, the fire darkened down, but the weary firefighters had to stay another 24 hours on the job - E's 14, 18, 28, & T's 5 & 10 were special called @ 0807hrs, & the signal 9 sounded @ 0815hrs for a detail of 24 men to the fire - The recall was tapped out @ 1722hrs on 2/8/1920. (TUH)

1935: Box#2822, Ashland & Milton Aves (East Of Downtown), sounded @ 0705hrs for a garage fire @ Luzerne Ave & Eager St - When a gas tank of a truck exploded it showered Lieutenant Henry Binan, T-15, with flaming liquid - Another firefighter beat out the flames, but not before Lieutenant Binan was badly burned. (TUH)

1935: 2 Alarm + Special Call Chemical Foamite Co#4 - Box#2624 - 1554hrs - 752 N Gay St - Northeast Of Downtown - 6 neighborhood boys, ages 10 to 14, asked the owner of a tailor shop if they could play in the warm cellar of his shop - The janitor, who was also in the basement, left on an errand & a 7th boy entered - The newcomer stood in front of the furnace & placed an iron poker into the red hot coals, then playfully waved it around the room & jabbed it into a bucket full of celluloid buttons, which blazed up instantly, scattering fire in every direction, causing a drum of cleaning fluid to explode - The 6 boys were trapped & instantly incinerated, everyone being burned beyond recognition - The boy who caused it somehow escaped & was found outside, his clothing burned off & was rolled in the snow by a passerby - Acting BC-2, Andrew J. Struler, E-6, found flames shooting out of the cellar straight up to the roof top of the 3 story brick building - He ordered a 2nd alarm sounded & special called Chemical Foamite Co#4 - Firefighters were unaware of the boys inside until they found the dead bodies afloat in 3' of water - The boy who escaped died after telling hospital attendants what had happened. (TUH)

1935: 3 Alarms - Box#446 - 1802hrs - 33 W Lexington St - Downtown North - Fire involved the 3 story brick Lerner Dress Shop - DC-1, George Otter, ordered BC-5, Clarence W. Smith, to sound a 2nd alarm when they arrived & found smoke showing - A moment later, a backdraft occurred causing an explosion that blew out the front windows, hurling firefighters off ladders in the middle of the street & 14 were injured, 2 seriously - Firefighter Theodore A. Seward, E-4, had the lower part of his body badly cut by glass - Firefighter William Plunkett, E-23, received a fractured skull - BC Smith assumed charge when DC Otter was lying unconscious in the street & ordered a 3rd alarm sounded - Injured were Captain Paul LaPlanche, & Firefighters William Boone, Louis Votta, Carl E. Smith, & Edwin Baroch, E-23, Lieutenant Charles Brown & Firefighters Robert Fadler, William J. Parker, & Frank Osterman, E-4, George L. Herman & Nelson Little, T-2. (TUH)

1952: 6 Alarms - Box#739 - 300 N Warwick Ave - West Baltimore - Fire involved a vacant slaughter house. (CHM1)

2001: 2 Alarms - Box#46-4 - 1214hrs - 3816 Menlo Dr - Northwest Baltimore - Fire involved a 2 story brick dwelling. (TGA)
