CINCINNATI, OH:

CINCINNATI FIRE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
District 3

Media Contact:
District Fire Chief Anson Turley 352-2333
Date: 02/10/02
Time: 09:13 a.m.

Good afternoon,

This is Cincinnati Fire District Chief Anson Turley reporting on a 2-alarm fire that took place this morning in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Carthage. The call for the fire came in at 09:13 a.m. Many callers were reporting smoke from the house at 123 W Seymour Avenue.

When fire companies arrived they were met with heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the structure. Engine Company 2 and Ladder Company 2 were first on the scene.

When the companies first entered the building visibility was poor because of heavy smoke. Ladder 2 used a new piece of equipment issued to firefighters called a thermal imaging camera. With this device firefighters can see the relative heat emitted by various objects during a fire. This allows them some visibility in a structure filled with smoke.

This camera enabled Nathaniel Stubblefield a firefighter with Ladder CO 2 to find and rescue the first victim of the fire. A 42-year-old female whose name is being withheld until the proper notifications is made. The second victim a 6 year old girl was also rescued from the fire. Both victims are listed in critical condition at this time. The women were transported to University hospital and the child was taken to Children's hospital. Firefighter Joseph Laury from Engine Company 9 rescued the child.

Engine companies are not issued thermal imaging cameras so this rescue was accomplished by means of a primary search. It took 45 firefighters approximately one and one-half hours to bring this fire under control. The building is what is termed balloon frame construction. What this means is the walls have no built in protection from the spread of a fire. A fire that starts in the basement will quickly spread unchecked to the roof and upper floors in a very short period of time. This type of construction made this a very difficult fire to extinguish. No firefighters were injured on the fireground. The cause and origin of the fire are undetermined and under investigation. Damage is set at $120,000.00

For further questions call D3 Chief Turley at 352-2333

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for February 11th:

1928: Baltimore County - "The Great Reisterstown Fire" burned for more than 11 hours, destroying 8 stores & causing $250,000 in damages - The fire was discovered @ 0345hrs in Sander's Meat Market & the weather was near freezing & snow covered the area - There was no public water supply in Reisterstown @ the time & the reservoir was not built until 4 years later, so it was necessary to pump water from Johnson's ice pond, located in the woods between Westminster Pk & ****eys Mill Rd, about 2 miles west of town - It required a tractor to pull the engine through the mud & snow to get to the pond & several engines were needed to relay water to the fire through (1) 2.5" line - A lone 17 year old female telephone operator on duty @ the telephone exchange began calling neighboring communities for help & eventually 18 fire companies were on hand to assist, with Lineboro coming the longest distance traveling 35 miles over very bad roads & taking 1hr & 50mins - The fire was finally stopped @ Brook's Hardware Store which had brick walls - Eline's Funeral Home, 75' away, had the paint scorched by the intense heat - Buildings destroyed were the Tourist Lunchroom, John Sander's Meat Market, Judson Yingling's Confectionery Store, & Rimby Brothers Bowling Alleys, all located in the Christhilf Building, with apartments upstairs, the A&P Food Store, Dr. C. 1959: 6 Alarms - Box#3524 - 0552hrs - 219-247 W Hoffman St - Mount Royal (North Of Downtown) - Fire involved the 5th Regiment Armory - The fire started in the basement pistol range & firefighters donned gas masks & moved in with hose lines to extinguish the smokey fire - After struggling for over an hour & making progress, firefighters watched their efforts suddenly vanish as the metal ceiling of the room collapsed & the fire moved into the mezzanine floor, mushrooming out in all directions - The 2nd alarm was sounded @ 0713hrs, the 3rd alarm @ 0719hrs, & Acting Chief Charles H. Theiss sounded the 6th alarm @ 0727hrs - It was impossible to fight the fire from the outside of the fortress like structure & firefighters took a real beating before extinguishing the fire - Injured when struck by a falling steel girder were Captain Ralph Snowman, T-11, Lieutenant Stanley Bochenek, Hose Co#3, & Firefighters John Puller, E-7, Percy Reese, E-28, & Albert Beran, T-11 - The same building was gutted by an 11 alarm fire on 1/13/1933 - BC-3 requested the 6th alarm on arrival, the 1st instance in the annuals of the Department.
