Three children jump from porch roof to escape fire in there home this afternoon.
This is District Chief Denny Clark reporting on a fire at 4112 Witler St. in Northside this afternoon. Three children were trapped on the upper floor of there home while their mother attempted to extinguish a fire in a mattress that was burning in the first floor hallway. The fire quickly spread up through an open stairwell forcing the children, ages 9, 7, and 5 to escape onto porch roofs through second floor windows where they jumped to the ground. A passerby who came to the firehouse two blocks from the scene reported the fire. When firefighters arrived less than a minute later they were faced with heavy fire showing from a first floor side entrance and both upper floors. Due to the coordinated efforts of over twenty firefighters the fire was quickly brought under control before spreading to nearby homes on either side.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The father and the family's seven other children were not at home at the time of the fire. The mother and children were transported by fire department ambulances to University and Children's hospitals for smoke inhalation and injuries from jumping off of the porch roof. Although the home and contents suffered nearly $20,000 in fire damage, this family was very fortunate that no one was seriously injured.
Questions may be directed to District Chief Clark at (513)352-2344 or Fire Investigations Captain Dan Rottmueller at (513)352-1685

Nine families affected by fire in Apartment Building at 3451 McHenry Ave.
This is District Chief Denny Clark reporting on a fire that occurred this evening in a basement apartment that spread into the hallway causing families on three floors to flee the burning building through windows and doors onto balconies. When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was pouring from the top floor and fire was visible through the glass doors of the main stairwell. Due to the potential life hazard a 2nd Alarm was requested to assist in a coordinated effort of search and rescue and firefighting efforts. A "primary" or rapid search revealed that all occupants were safely out of the building and the fire was quickly brought under control prior to the arrival of the second alarm compliment of fire companies. Fire Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire, which originated in a couch. The fire appears to have spread throughout the livingroom and kitchen and then into the hallway through the front door which was left open when the occupants fled. The occupants at the time the fire started were two brothers ages 15 and 12. The boy's mother was at work at the time of the fire and returned home to find her apartment and personal contents in ruins with damages estimated at $10,000. The Red Cross is
making arrangements to assist the family with temporary housing. Property management was on scene to make temporary repairs to apartments suffering collateral damage as a result of the fire so that the tenants were able to go back into their homes.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INVESTIGATION:
On Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 0914 Hours (9:14 AM PST) five Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one LAFD Hazardous Materials Squad, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances and one EMS District Captain, all under the direction of 3rd Battalion Commander Richard Markota responded to a Hazardous Materials Investigation at 1354 East 15th Street in the Newton area of Los Angeles. The first Company to arrive on scene encountered persons with minor medical complaints at or near “Victor Wash House”, an industrial firm using chemicals to alter the appearance of denim clothing. Nearly a dozen workers from within the firm and those nearby were led to open air shelter as LAFD Hazardous Materials experts, using sophisticated sensing devices, scoured the premises in search of hazardous substances. Two workers experiencing minor chest discomfort were later assessed by LAFD Paramedics before being released at the scene. LAFD Haz-Mat Squad personnel determined that there was no escalating danger, and that residual products in the environment and stored at the scene did not require Fire Department mitigation. This incident is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Health Department.

MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 2308 Hours (11:08 PM PST) 37 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one LAFD Helicopter, seven Battalion Officer Command Teams and various specialized LAFD units, as well as nine Companies and one Battalion Officer from the Glendale Fire Department, all under the direction of LAFD’s Assistant Chief Curtis James, responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 4524 and 4528 West Brazil Street in Los Angeles. The first Company arrived quickly on scene to discover a 200’ x 400’ one-story industrial structure with fire through the roof. Firefighters skillfully advanced handlines and positioned heavy stream appliances to attack fire within the well-involved structure. Despite Firefighters efforts, the immense fire involvement soon led to structural compromise of the masonry structure, including an arched truss roof. Firefighters contained the flames to Historic Tile Company at 4524 West Brazil Street and Normal Inc at 4528 West Brazil Street. They extinguished the fire in just 77 minutes. There were no injuries. Loss from this fire is still being tabulated. The cause of the fire remains listed as under active investigation.

(TUH)
1955: 4 Alarms - Box#7221 - 1210hrs - Frederick Ave & Ellamont St - Southwest Baltimore - Fire involved the 3 story brick Gannon's Restaurant during some of the coldest weather in years - High winds blew over a 35' ground ladder, injuring Firefighters George McAlleer & William Martin, E-30 - 4 alarms were sounded before the flames were extinguished by ice coated firefighters. Miller, radioed for the 2nd & 3rd alarms @ 1924 & 1928hrs - Firefighters quickly controlled the confined fire, but more were needed to assist in evacuation - The local fire alarm warning bells on each floor were discovered to be inoperative, due to someone unknown loosening the fuse in the master control box without telling anyone, because they got tired of hearing 6 false alarms ring out in as many weeks - Then the elevators shorted out, trapping persons between floors - R-1 used its power-pak to force open the elevator doors & release the trapped occupants, including 1 man in his underwear - Another desperate tenant threw a rope made of tied together bed sheets out of a 6th floor window, but changed his or her mind & used the stairwell to escape - An elderly occupant suffered a mild heart attack & a firefighter's leg was bruised when a charged hose snapped taunt - Firefighters spent much of the rest of the night carrying the elderly residents up dozens of flights of steps, back to their apartments.

Questions may be directed to District Chief Clark at (513) 352-2344 or Fire Investigations Captain Dan Rottmueller at (513) 352-1685

LOS ANGELES, CA:
