LOS ANGELES, CA:
MULTI-PATIENT SHOOTING:
On Friday, February 08, 2002 at 2146 Hours (9:46 PM PST) three Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, seven LAFD Rescue Ambulances and one EMS District Captain under the direction of 12th Battalion Commander Evan Williams responded to a Multi-Patient Shooting at 9100 Noble Avenue in the Panorama City area. The first Company to arrive on scene was directed to a garage-lined alley at the rear of an apartment building. With early reports of as many as ten injured persons, additional LAFD rescuers were summoned while triage and medical command were established. The victims, ranging from 14 to 20 years of age, were reportedly participating in a social event when gunfire erupted. Of the ten persons triaged, seven who sustained bullet or pellet wounds were determined to be in need of hospital attention. The seven included a male with gunshot wounds to the head in critical condition, and six others in minor to moderate distress. LAFD personnel deftly treated all of those involved and soon had six males and one female transported to area hospitals. There were no Firefighter injuries. This incident is being actively investigated by Los Angeles Police Department officials.

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***
for February 8th:
1885: Box#42 - 0603hrs - 407-411 W Baltimore St - Downtown West - Fire involved the 4 story brick Cassard Grainery - When firefighters arrived, flames were blowing out all of the upper windows & through the roof - Bins holding ten thousand bushels of grain gave way & the firefighters all fell through to the cellar - All were injured, but strange to say, none seriously as the grain acted as a cushion - After rescuers dug in the ruins for hours, all were accounted for. (TUH)
1920: The Fire Board threw a bombshell in the newly formed City Firefighters' Association, demanding that the Union be disbanded within 48hrs, the alternative being that unless the order is complied with, members who fail to sever their connections with the Union will be dismissed - The Fire Board said that conditions were intolerable & drastic action was necessary as a result of insubordination - The meeting was attended by Chief Engineer August Emrich & all of the District Engineers - The present Union is headed by former Captain John T. Owens, & boasted over 800 members, including a majority of the Officers - The order & a letter from Mayor William F. Broening declaring that the action of the Fire Board has his unqualified indorsement, was read to more than 200 firefighters @ a meeting in Red Men's Hall, 100 N Paca St, behind closed & locked doors - Mr Owens was asked if there was any possibility of a strike by the firefighters - He replied "You can tell the people of Baltimore, they have no reason to worry over the situation, @ every fire, every firefighter will be @ his post" - He refused to comment any further - The Union was demanding a 2 platoon system & an annual salary of $2,000 - Former Captain Owens is a daily visitor to the Mayor's office in City Hall, & it is rumored that he is an active candidate for Chief Engineer Emrich's position, in as much as he is a Republican & Executive of the 19th Ward. (TUH)
1945: 5 Alarms - Box#1931 - 0657hrs - 3430 Eastern Ave - Highlandtown (East Baltimore) - Fire involved the 3 story brick Irvins Department Store - A terrible smoke condition existed & 5 alarms were sounded by 0801hrs as the fire burned fiercely - 12 firefighters were trapped on the 3rd floor when they were caught in a backdraft & they were rescued by being hoisted to the roof by their comrades - BC-8, Michael M Mackin, fell through a hole in the 3rd floor, but luckily grabbed a finger hold & hung dangling in space, until pulled up to safety by firefighters - The fire burned downward in the 122' long building, loaded with merchandise, until it reached the fuel tanks in the basement around 2300hrs, which exploded & the fire was going like new again - Injured were Firefighters Marshall Batchelor, E-4, & George Ruth, E-6 - 12hrs later, only the shell of the once handsome marble front building was still standing. (TUH)
1953: 3 Alarms - Box#717 - 2130 McHenry St - West Of Downtown - Fire involved the Stewart & Company. (CHM1)
1954: T-29 was organized & on 2/26/1954 was placed in active service in the new quarters on the southwest corner of Cold Spring Ln & Arlington Ave, Northwood (North Baltimore) - The firehouse is a 2 story brick building costing $280,000 with 2 doors for the exit of apparatus - T-29's 1st Captain was Elmer P. Dunne, from T-18 - They received a new 1954 85' steel aerial ladder, mid-mount, straight chassis truck, built by Peter Pirsch - On 2/27/1954, E-4 relocated into the same firehouse - In the concrete bomb proof sub-basement of the firehouse, is located the emergency Headquarters of the Civil Defense Corps. (TUH)
1989: 2 Alarms - Box#829 - 2355hrs - 510-514 E 20th St - North Of Downtown - Fire involved (3) 3 story brick rowhouses - Companies were mopping up a fire in the 500 block E 22nd St, when a civilian ran up & told firefighters of this fire on 20th St - This fire had started in the 1st floor front room of 512 & spread up the stairway to the 2nd & 3rd floors & through the roof, extending to 510 & 514 - The 2nd alarm was sounded @ 0013hrs & the fire placed under control @ 0058hrs - Lieutenant Kirk Haywood, T-7, injured his left foot when he fell throught a hole in the floor - He was carried out of the dwelling by firefighters, treated on the scene & transported to Union Memorial Hospital - The Pump Operator of E-7 was injured when a cap blew off the hydrant & injured his knee - He was taken to the Department Infirmary for treatment - It is believed that this fire & the fire on 22nd St were caused by homeless people living in the vacant dwellings starting fires to keep warm. (CHM1*TGA)
2001: 3 Alarms - Box#T15-2 - 0140hrs - 2313 E Lafayette Ave - Northeast Of Downtown - Fire involved a 2 story brick rowhouse. (TGA)

(TGA)
