*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***
LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE
On Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 1324 hours fourteen companies of Firefighters, two Battalion Command Teams, two Rescue Ambulances, two Dump Trucks, a Skip-loader, a Tractor Transport and a Dozer Tender under Assistant Chief W. W. Bisson responded to a greater alarm structure fire at 12113 1/2 Branford Street in the Pacoima area. First units on scene reported a one-story, 50’ x 200’ multiple occupancy commercial with fire showing in one unit. Firefighters using handlines and heavy stream appliances confined the fire to Unit B-6, a 50’ x 75’ portion of the total structure dba “Mars Used Auto Parts”, an auto dismantling business and extinguished the fire in forty-nine minutes. Substantial run-off of oil mixed with water was contained with sand by the Dump Trucks and Skip-loader. No injuries were reported. The cause was the owner of the business using a cutting torch and igniting one of the twenty cars in the structure in various states of disassembly and exposing ten more outside. The loss is estimated to be $200,000. ($100,000 to structure and $100,000 to contents).

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***
for February 16th:
1955 - 9 Alarms - 6-6-12 & 3-3-1222 - 2102hrs - 507-509 E Baltimore St - Downtown East - Fire involved the 3 story brick 80' long Tru-Fit Clothing Company - Heavy smoke was showing from the basement & Acting DC-2, Carroll F. Hand, BC-1, sounded a 2nd alarm @ 2106hrs & a 3rd alarm @ 2113hrs - The ground floor was mostly concrete, making the fire hard to reach - Holes were cut in the wooden part & cellar pipes were put into operation - Chief Engineer Michael H. Lotz ordered the 4th alarm @ 2133hrs, 5th alarm @ 2149hrs, & 6th alarm @ 2217hrs, as the raging basement fire defied the efforts of firefighters - The torrent of water loosened from a score of hose lines finally darkened the fire & firefighters entered the building to complete extinguishment - The Chief Engineer & BC-5, George H. Redmon, climbed to the roof of a 1 story rear addition, when it suddenly, without warning, dropped like an elevator, pulling the walls inward with it - The firefighters underneath didn't have a chance to move a foot before the avalanche covered them up with tons of rubble - A few were lucky & crawled out unaided & unhurt - (8) firefighters dug themselves out, although injured - Meanwhile, Chiefs Lotz & Redmon plunged 10' into the chasm, Lotz being wedged tight by a heavy iron fire shutter, with water from a dropped hose pipe hitting him in the face - A 12' ladder was lowered into the wreckage & the Chief Engineer freed, who unmindful of his own wounds, crawled to the street & ordered his aide, Captain Francis X. Walsh, Water Tower #2, to sound the 3rd alarm (9th alarm) from adjacent Box#1222 @ 2254hrs for help in rescue operations - Frantic rescue workers jumped into the ruins & started digging as DC-1, Charles H. Knapp, directed operations - After 30 minutes, (12) firefighters were rescued & the dead body of Firefighter William W. Barnes, E-17 detailed E-2, was uncovered - A shout was heard from the bottom of the heap & with renewed vigor, the brave firefighters dug faster & faster - After 4 hours of hard work, they succeeded in freeing Lieutenant Leonard N. Wiles, T-7 detailed T-16, who was conscious & conversed with his rescuers - Captain Martin G. McMahon, Municipal Ambulance Service, administered pain killing drugs to him during the ordeal, & interns & nurses from Johns Hopkins Hospital were on the scene to administer first aid to the injured - (6) priests from neighboring churches were led by firefighters through a narrow passageway from Gay St to administer the last rites to the men trapped in the collapsed building - Next, the body of BC-4, Francis X. O'Brien, was uncovered - He was 53 years old with 31 years in the fire service - 9 more hours were spent gnawing @ the huge pile of debris, until all the firefighters were accounted for - Dead were Firefighters Joseph F. Hanley, E-13 (Aide to Chief O'Brien), Anthony N. Reinsfelder, T-16, & Rudolph A. Machovec, & Richard F. Melser, E-15 - Injured were Lieutenants Edmond N. Dalton, E-17, Martin A. D'Alesandro launched The Fireman's Tragedy Fund, naming Mr. Frank J. Bauer, Presdient Of The Fire Board, as the Chairman - The Sunpapers will receive & forward to the proper authorities contributions to a fund for the bereaved families, starting with a $1,000 check - The Baltimore News Post & Sunday American also played an important part in making the fund raising a success - The city was so moved that even children contributed their allowances to the fund - (3) benefits from various theatrical groups were given in the Century Theatre & various stage, screen, radio, recording, & TV stars donated their time to the benefits - @ the conclusion of the campaign $168,000 was raised - The owner of Tru-Fit was questioned by Anselm Sodaro, States Attorney, & BC John S. Knoerlein, Arson Squad - Later, a Federal jury ruled Tru Fit was not entitled to collect insurance for fire damage to inventory as a result of the fire that destroyed the store. (CHM1*TUH)
1959: Chemical Co#4 disbanded - In Service 12/6/1926. (CHM2)
1969: E-9 moved out of their 97 year old firehouse & relocated in T-5's quarters. (TUH)

(TUH)
