*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***
LOS ANGELES, CA:
STRUCTURE FIRE WITH FIREFIGHTER INJURIES:
On Sunday, February 17, 2002 at 1628 Hours (4:28 PM PST), six Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances and one EMS District Captain under the direction of 18th Battalion Commander Daryl Arbuthnott responded to a Structure Fire at 415 North Sycamore Avenue in the Fairfax District. The first Company to arrive on scene reported smoke showing from a two-story apartment building. Firefighters using handlines made a pertinacious interior assault on the fire, which was well involved in one unit on the northwest corner of the 2nd floor. They extinguished the flames in just 30 minutes. During fire attack, a total of five Los Angeles Firefighters sustained first-degree burns to their necks and ears. Triaged at scene by their colleagues, they were transported to the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Community Hospital, where they were treated and released pending further care. There were no other injuries. Loss from the fire is still being tabulated. The cause of the blaze is attributed to carelessness with a candle.
