***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***
for February 18th:
1921: Box#231, Jefferson & Bond Sts (Northeast Of Downtown), was sounded & E-6 collided with a streetcar @ Caroline & Jefferson Sts - Captain John Maguire, Lieutenant Frederick Kaufmann, Engineman Henry Niemann, & Firefighter Joseph A Mulinger were injured. (TUH)
1958: 8 Alarms - 6-6-86 & 2-2-8522 - 0616hrs - Roland Ave & 36th St - Hampden (North Of Downtown) - Fire involved the 5 story brick rear warehouse of the Sandler Department Store - Heavy smoke was showing upon arrival & Acting BC-9, Herman Reedy, Captain T-9, sounded the 2nd alarm @ 0629hrs - DC-2, Charles H. Theiss, sounded the 6th alarm @ 0646hrs when the building became a blazing inferno - It was cold & snowing & the flames burst through the roof, the fire resisting tons of water from a score of hose lines - A 2nd alarm (8th alarm) was sounded from adjacent Box#8522 @ 0833hrs - For 4 hours the fire burned out of control until everything in the warehouse was destroyed - The main store was heavily damaged. (CHM1*TUH)
1976: 9 Alarms - 6-6-513 & 3-3-515 - 1947hrs - 106 Hopkins Pl - Downtown West - Fire involved a 6 story brick, vacant, boarded up, city owned loft building - Seeing heavy fire showing as he pulled out of Steadman Station, Acting BC-5, Alfred M. Feathers, Captain T-2, ordered the High Pressure Pumping Station to be activated & to strike out the 3rd alarm @ 1949hrs - Arriving companies found fire blowing out all the windows from the 2nd floor upwards - The fire burned through the roof & blasted up against the 8 story brick Sutton Building across the rear alley - 4th & 5th alarms were sounded by Acting Chief Feathers @ 1952hrs, & a 6th alarm was sounded by DC Francis C. Tisha @ 1958hrs - Chief Tisha also ordered firefighters to throw up a water curtain in the narrow back alley, which proved to be very effective - The exposed building was locked for the night & it's iron clad fire shutters @ every window opening were closed tight & held back the flames - The rear fire escape attached to the burning building popped out of the wall, falling heavily to the ground causing firefighters to run for their lives but every one escaped injury - Flaming embers that were cast out of the burning warehouse blew in a southwesterly direction, causing @ least (5) other calls that were answered by E-17 & T-19 - Chief Deputy Herbert W. Catterton ordered a 2nd alarm (8th alarm) sounded from adjacent Box#515 @ 2012hrs & a 3rd alarm (9th alarm) @ 2026hrs - It was more than 2 hours later that firefighters were able to beat down the fire, & the whole interior of the burning building, including the roof, had collapsed into the basement - There was no concrete evidence of arson, but the amazing speed with which the fire spread upward made it awfully suspicious - @ it's pinnacle, flames were leaping more than 200' into the air, towering over the cluster of 67 year old buildings - The fire was seen as far away as Catonsville - Over 200 firefighters battled the blaze & injuries were limited to 1, Firefighter Gary W. Bowers, T-2, who was hit by a falling brick & suffered a cut & bruised forearm - Adjoining buildings were damaged by the tons of water poured on the fire - Firefighter George J. Merkle, R-1, was in the basket of Water Tower #1 (Snorkle) in front of the burning building throwing water from it's monitor pipe & was face to face with the heavy fire, but he was uninjured, being protected from the heat by a monitor pipe directed on him from the ground. (CHM1*TUH)
1984: 2 Alarms - Box#8876 - 0245hrs - 5110 Wesley Ave - Howard Park (Northwest Baltimore) - Fire involved a 2.5 story woodframe Day Care Center - Both Fire Investigation & Police Arson investigated this intentionally set fire. (TGA)

(TGA)
