***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***
for February 20th:
1953: The 2-way radio system was placed in active service - A shop for installations & repairs was set up in E-30's quarters. (TUH)
1956: The Fire Board promoted 55 firefighters, the largest number @ 1 time in the history of the Department - The unprecedented action was the result of new positions allocated in the budget & to several retirements, notably DC-3, Clarence W. Smith, 69, with 45 years of service, & BC-6, Harry A. Dolle, 68, with 44 years of service - John J. Killen, Battalion Chief Fire Prevention Bureau, & Roland F. Wett, BC-9, were named Deputy Chiefs - 10 Captains were moved up to Battalion Chiefs, 13 Lieutenants to Captain, 24 Firefighters to Lieutenant, 5 Firefighters to Assistant Enginemen, and a Fire Alarm Operator to Chief. (TUH)
1959: 6 Alarms - Box#8128 - 1942hrs - 1640 Gorsuch Ave - Northeast Of Downtown - Fire involved the 3 story brick Baltimore Biological Laboratory - A passerby informed the members of E-33 to look outside for a job awaiting them - Lieutenant Harold W. Letts radioed for Box#817 to be struck out, but Box#8128 was struck out by Fire Communications - Lieutenant Letts radioed for the 2nd alarm @ 1943hrs - The fire started in the basement of the 3 story former piano factory & swept up the elevator shaft, consuming the all wood interior of the building - BC-8, Michael M. Mackin, sounded the 3rd alarm @ 1954hrs & Acting Chief Charles H. Theiss sounded the 6th alarm @ 2000hrs - The upper floors fell down & the structure became an inferno, somewhat welcomed in the 20 degree cold & snow, & when flames burned through the roof, they leaped high into the air - When the fire darkened down, every firefighter became a human icicle due to the spray from the ladder pipes & monitor streams - Injured were Firefighters Arthur Krieder, T-5, & Benjamin Patterson, E-11. (CHM1*TUH)
1975: Box#8222, Loch Raven Rd & Gutman Ave (Northeast Of Downtown), sounded @ 0837hrs - T-5 was responding & @ Bonaparte & Kirk Aves, crashed into a school bus, the truck hitting the right rear side of the moving bus, tipping it over on it's side & trapping the occupants - Nearby workmen ran to aid the (15) mentally chalenged students by lifting them out of the overturned vehicle through broken windows & an emergency door - Amazingly, the most serious injury was a broken arm sustained by a child - All were rushed to nearby hospitals, treated & released - The 1970 100' Seagrave Tiller Truck ran out of control, over the sidewalk on the northwest corner of the intersection & sheared off a fire hydrant & a wood utility pole, which was left dangling in the air supported by its overhead electric wires - The front of the truck was smashed, with jagged holes punched into it - Captain Ralph Ashbrook, Driver Steven Trimble, & Firefighter Jack A. Brown, were thrown into the street, while Tillerman Jules Wilfong remained in his protective enclosure - They were rushed to Mercy Hospital treated for minor cuts & bruises & released - The 22 year old bus driver was charged with failing to heed an emergency vehicle that was sounding both a siren & air horns @ the time - Later in the day, @ 1138hrs, Box#8222 sounded again & an 8 year old boy was caught in the act of turning in the false alarm & was held by 2 other students until firefighters arrived - The youngster said he "liked to see the fire engines", as he was detained by police. (TUH)
***After going over 1 year without an appointed Chief Of The Fire Department, Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley today (2/19/02) appointed Mr. William J. Goodwin, Jr., as the new Chief for the Baltimore City Fire Department - The 26 year veteran & 3rd generation Firefighter, has risen through the ranks in the department having positions @ T-3, E-33, Rescue-1, BC-7, BC-3, & was most recently the Director Of Training*** (RC*MP*GTE)
