LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM BRUSH FIRE:
On Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 2348 Hours (11:48 PM PST) ten Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Helicopters, one LAFD Rescue Ambulances and one LAFD Battalion Officer Command Team, as well as one Company of Firefighters, two Hand Crews and one Helicopter from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, all under the direction of LAFD’s 5th Battalion Commander John Miller, responded to a Greater Alarm Brush Fire near 2000 North Curson Avenue in the Hollywood Hills. The first Company to arrive on scene reported several acres of grass and brush burning in steep and inaccessible terrain within historic Wattles Garden Park. The flames, being fanned by light winds from the north did not immediately threaten homes. Firefighters using handlines labored to anchor the blaze in the rugged terrain as a series of precise helicopter water drops quickly flanked the flames. The well coordinated air and ground assault confined the blaze to five acres and extinguished the flames in just 73 minutes. No structures were damaged, and there were no injuries. The cause of this fire remains listed as under active investigation.

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***
for February 21st:
1922: Firefighter George C. Woodward, T-1, was riding on a Fairmount Ave streetcar, #765, when nearing Chester St (Washington Hill - East Of Downtown), he observed a little girl playing in the street ahead - As the car drew closer, she fell across the tracks - Realizing the car was going @ full speed, & that the motorman would not be able to stop in time, he shouted "Open the door", & climbed out on the front bumper - @ the last moment he reached down & pushed the little girl out of death's path, as she surely would have gone under the wheels of the trolley car - For his gallant & heroic actions in saving the life of the 6 year old, Firefighter Woodward was awarded $100 & the First Citizen's Medal by the Sunpapers. (TUH)
1930: The Fire Insurance Salvage Corps disbanded it's #4 station, Hanover St, near Randall St, South Baltimore - There was no more response by the Corps on the 1st alarm to fire alarms South of the Hanover & Russell St bridges, East of Clinton St & Sinclair Ln, & West & Southwest of Gwynns Falls. (TUH)
1936: 6 Alarms - Box#1841 - 1715hrs - Pier#8 - Clinton St - Canton (Southeast Baltimore) - Fire involved the Norwegian Steamship "Gisla", which was loaded with 5,000 tons of highly flammable nitrate - The ship burned fiercely, flames raging unabated for over 3 hours, as explosion after explosion rocked the vessel & 6 alarms were sounded - BC-5, Clarence W. Smith led a crew of firefighters out to the end of the pier & directed a hose line from the fireboat into the hold of the blazing ship - There was an explosion & clouds of nitrate fumes engulfed & trapped the firefighters, who retreated toward shore, Chief Smith coming out last - When he heard a scream for help, he turned back into the smoke & fumes & groped through the darkness & stumbled over the body of Firefighter Kulp, E-5, & managed to raise him to a sitting position, which saved his life, meanwhile calling for assistance - When the fumes & smoke momentarily cleared, the body of Firefighter George J. Reif, T-3 detailed E-5, was noticed lying face down in a pool of water - Chief Smith, nearly unconscious himself from the terrible choking fumes, stayed with the men until rescuers with masks arrived, then he collapsed & was rescued - For more than 12 hours, thousands of tons of water poured into the ship's hold until the keel settled on to the harbor bottom - (7) firefighters were affected by the smoke & fumes & 15 were treated for cold & exposure - The fireboats were coated solidly with ice - Firefighter Reif was dead & carried to shore - He was 39 years old & with BCFD for 12 years - He was buried 2/25/1936 in Oaklawn Cemetery - It was surmised that both Kulp & Reif were struck by a stream from the bow pipe of 1 of the fireboats & knocked down - Also injured were Captain Victor Propst, Firefighters Henry Streckfus & Thomas Plummer, E-5, John Debeluis, T-20, & Edward Symansh, E-11. (CHM1*TUH)
1966: 3 Alarms - Box#8922 - 2405 Roslyn Ave - Windsor Hills (Northwest Baltimore) - Fire involved the Stevenson's Nursing Home. (CHM1)
1977: 2 Alarms - Box#549 - 1901 E Fort Ave - Locust Point (South Baltimore) - Fire involved a 1.5 story woodframe building @ the Fort McHenry Lumber Company. (CHM1*GTE)
1998: 1 Alarm + Special Call 1 Air Cascade(1), 1 Medic(3), 1 Battalion Chief(2), & Shift Commander - Box#8231 - 0657hrs - 4307 Frankford Ave - Gardenville (Northeast Baltimore) - Fire involved a 2.5 story woodframe rooming house for men - (1) male resident in his 50's died in the fire - (1) other resident was treated for smoke inhalation & a shoulder dislocation suffered when he jumped to safety from a 2nd floor window - (3) other roomers were not injured but made homeless - Damage was set @ $65,000 in this smoking materials caused fire. Helping Our Own
"firefighter helping firefighter"
There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.
Please check out the following website - Maybe your FD can help out.

(CHM1)
