*** Don Manno's Funeral***
Long-time National Fire Academy instructor, firefighter and chief fire officer Anthony Don Manno was laid to rest in the shadow of the Maryland Fallen Heroes Memorial, Dulaney Memorial Gardens, Timonium, MD on February 21, 2002. Many of Don's students and associates from across the country gathered to pay their final respects to one of America's fire service greats.
Countless lives, both civilian and fire service, have been spared through the years due to Don's tireless efforts in the areas of fire prevention, firefighter safety, command and control, and fire service leadership.
Special thanks to two of Don's former departments, Bowie, Maryland which provided a classic funeral caisson in their beautiful 1964 Brockway/Seagreave engine, and Taneytown, Maryland which provided one of two aerial ladders framing the cemetrary entrance with a large American flag. Thanks also to College Park, MD for providing their classic open-cab Pirsch rear-mount aerial for the funeral procession, to Providence Volunteer Fire Department who paired with Taneytown's truck in displaying the American flag, and to the ****eysville Volunteer Fire Department for their gracious hospitality during the reception following the service.
Don Manno impacted literally thousands of lives in the fire service. The services of Bowie, Taneytown, College Park, Providence and ****eysville are gratefully acknowdged by everyone who loved Don Manno as a brother.

(TUH)
1929: Captain William R. Bolgiano, E-52, was transferred to the Fire Prevention Bureau - He was 70 years old & had 33 years with BCFD, 30 as Captain - His notability was a handlebar mustache, always well groomed, & his unhurried insistence that every man have his turnout coat buttoned up before he would remove his helmet from its perch atop the bell of the Ahrens-Fox engine, & order the firehouse exit doors opened - He was almost 82 years old, when in 1940, he was placed on the Pension Roll, & involuntarily - His death was announced on 11/6/1947 @ the age of 89. *** WOF Report Questions ***
FDNY Rescue 5?
When this unit responds from Staten Island to other boroughs how does it get there? By Ferry?
If you know the answer to the above question please e-mail Martin Baumann.

Question
I know this may seem a little bit off the wall, but, for a class, I need to find a credible source to prove or disprove the following:
"The reason firehouses have circular stairways comes from when the engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight staircases."
If you happen to have any historians on hand within your staff, I would REALLY appreciate an email from one, letting me know why there were spiral staircases in early firehouses. If not, any tips to help me find the answer would be greatly appreciated also.
Thank you for your time.

"The Chicago Firefighter’s Best Friend" will be the first book to document the role and tradition of Chicago firedogs through real life stories, history, and photography. It will appeal to firefighters, dog lovers, and Chicagoans. We hope to have over 200 pictures and at least 100 firedog narratives assessing the important role dogs have played and continue to play in Chicago firehouses. A percentage of the proceeds generated from book sales will be donated to a charitable organization which assists victims of fires.

The Chicago Firefighter's Best Friend
"The Chicago Firefighter’s Best Friend" will be the first book to document the role and tradition of Chicago firedogs through real life stories, history, and photography. It will appeal to firefighters, dog lovers, and Chicagoans. We hope to have over 200 pictures and at least 100 firedog narratives assessing the important role dogs have played and continue to play in Chicago firehouses. A percentage of the proceeds generated from book sales will be donated to a charitable organization which assists victims of fires.
