Obituary: John J (Jack) Cashman 1916-2001

By Francis L . Brannigan (now the sole remaining Founding Member of the Fire Bell Club of the Fire Department of the City of New York).

Jack Cashman and I were friends for over 60 years. We met in 1937 when we were fellow buffs at 24 Truck on 33rd Street in Manhattan. Jack came from a firefighting family. His grandfather was an NYC volunteer who joined the new paid New York department in 1865...rising to the rank of Deputy Chief. His grandmother was a sister-in-law of James Dale, the last Chief of the Brooklyn City Fire Department, which existed prior to the formation of FDNY-merging all of the 5 boroughs. His uncles were respectively: Captain of 71 Engine, FDNY; ***'t. Chief of the Fire Patrol; a Fire Marshal; Chief of Ridgefield Park N.J. His cousin was a BC, FDNY.

Jack joined the City of New York Fire Department in 1941 and was appointed to FDNY 3 Truck. After serving as a Navy Firefighter in WWII he went to Rescue 1, was Chief's Aide in the 6th Battalion and the 2nd Division. He was clearly a "fireman's fireman." After the war, he bought a home in Levittown, Long Island and was active in the organization of the Levittown, N.Y. Fire Department... serving as its first Chief of Department.

Jack Cashman retired as Lieutenant of 5 Truck, after 26 years serving FDNY-"South of 14th St.." As talented as Jack was, he was recruited to become the Chief of the Barrington, RI (combination paid/volunteer) Fire Department for ten years. Jack is a charter member of the FDNY Honor Legion (Five FDNY Bravery Citations required). Jack holds the Delehanty and Department Medals for valor as well. One of his numerous other citations is a Class II for his great personal risk in the Broadway collapse rescues.

Those who study "Building Construction For The Fire Service" are the beneficiaries of a number of nuggets of his hard-won experience worked into the text. His astonishing article "Disaster on Broadway" at which he was aide to the first due BC is available by contacting Fbrannigan@aol.com.

Jack Cashman, an FDNY "fireman's fireman" was also a true gentleman and a wonderful friend to so many. He will be greatly missed.

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for February 24th:

1947: 9 Alarms - Box#14-39, 6-6-4123, & 2-2-586 - 1834hrs - 306-310 W Fayette St - Downtown West - Fire involved the May Company, South Annex Building - Firefighters found a blazing trash can under a table in the 5th floor mail room & a burned pile of excelsior which the sprinkler system had doused - Acting BC-5, Elmer W. Kesting, Captain T-2, requested the Fire Incendiary Bureau, & Captain Robert E. Lee Baker responded - Firefighter Edwin J. Gaskin, Aide To DC-1, was on his way to tap out the recall & passing members of Hose Co#2, who were putting the unused hose back on the wagon, when to the astonishment of everyone, flames suddenly shot out of the 5th floor windows in the main building @ Howard & Lexington Sts - Acting Lieutenant Elmer Kolscher, Hose Co#2, quickly positioned the hose wagon & Firefighter Gaskin ran into the annex building to alert DC-1, Charles H. Knapp, who was already on his way to Box#4123 to sound the 2nd alarm @ 1927hrs (it was actually the 3rd alarm) - Meanwhile on the 5th floor of the annex, Acting Lieutenant Edward A. Munchow, E-23, & his men, with a section of hose & the pipe, walked over the connecting bridge into the main building to get the elevator to go downstairs - Suddenly a flash fire swept along the ceiling & the firefighters, along with Captain Baker, had to turn & run for their lives as the fire touched off everything within reach - Just when they got back safely in the annex building the fire door rolled down behind them - (2) janitors were on an elevator & opened the doors @ the 5th floor level into a sea of flames - They ran through the fire & onto the connecting bridge where they encountered the closed fire door - Their screams were heard by the firefighters, who pried up the steel door just in time to rescue the blistered & almost suffocated men from instant death - The sprinkler system in the main building was inoperative due to someone unknown, closing the main valve in the basement - The system was not ADT supervised - The fire engulfed the entire 5th floor of the main building & Chief Engineer Howard Travers sounded the 4th alarm from Box#4123 @ 1951hrs, 6th alarm @ 2015hrs, adjacent Box#586 (8th alarm) @ 2028hrs, & a 2nd alarm (9th alarm) @ 2056hrs -@ the zenith of the spectacular fire, there were in play (11) High Pressure Service monitor pipes, (8) hose pipes on the roof of a 3 story building across a narrow alley, & (28) handlines - About 2100hrs, BC-2, Lorenz A. Dolle, with the members of E-6, worked their way up an inside stairway & into the fire area with several hand lines, & the fire began to darken down - In Ford's Theatre, a few doors away on Fayette St, almost 1,000 people were watching the theatrical performance "The Fireman Cometh", & sure enough he did, ordering the huge 76 year old opera house evacuated for the 1st time in it's history - Also, for the only instance @ that time, all (5) High Pressure Service Hose Companies responded & were in service @ the same fire - The fire area was confined to the 5th floor by the hard work of the firefighters, but smoke & water damage was excessive throughout the huge Department store. (TUH)

1969: 6 Alarms + Special Call Water Tower #1 (Snorkle) - Box#545 - 700 Scott St - Pigtown (Southwest Of Downtown) - Fire involved Public School #22. (CHM1)

1976: Shortly after 2400hrs, The S. S. Christina, a 662' Greek tanker, lying @ #3 Anchorage in the Patapsco River between Fort McHenry & Colgate Creek, its oil storage tanks empty & riding high in the water, caught fire when 1 of the unattended boilers overheated & flames burst out from under the bilge plates in the engine room - The 35 man crew, all asleep except the watchman, rushed awake & gave battle with the flames, using fire extinguishers & hand hoselines - The fire was uncontrollable, roaring upward into the aft superstructure which housed the crew's quarters, galley, & recreation room - The Captain of the ship reported that he radioed for help @ 0020hrs, but it was not until 0105hrs that the Fire Department heard of it - Fireboat #1, Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr., was dispatched to the aid of the burning vessel & 30 minutes later, Lieutenant Pilot Frank Anuzewski radioed that he could see fire on the superstructure & ordered Fireboat #2, Mayor J. Harold Grady, to also respond - @ 0148hrs, DC Joseph P. Piechocki, BC Edmund N. Dalton, & a recruited crew from E-34 & T-1, boarded Reserve Fireboat #2, August Emrich, & proceeded to the scene of the fire - Spectacular flames were raging on the aft deck, while the Captain & crew members had now retreated to the forward section for safety - The Fireboats loosened the big monitor pipes on the flames & proceeded to darken down the fire showing, but it was several hours later before the deck plates were cooled enough to go aboard - However, the fire was still raging down below in the ship's machinery of the engine room - DC Piechocki radioed for Box#1756, located @ the Dundalk Marine Terminal Fire Station, to be sounded @ 0150hrs, followed by special 2-10-4 calls (4 engines per special call) @ 0239hrs & 0354hrs - The reserve fireboats acted as shuttle ferryboats for firefighters & fire fighting equipment, including foam powder, brought out from shore in the 30 degree weather - Chief Of The Department Thomas J. Burke ordered 2-10-2 (2 engines) & 2-11-2 (2 trucks) special calls (E-1 & E-10, T-4 & T-21) sounded @ 0936hrs for more manpower - @ 1200hrs, Chief Burke described the fire as still producing thick black oily smoke, but that firefighters had the fire surrounded down in the engine room - The fire was finally extinguished around 1530hrs - Ironically, even though (8) separate alarm signals were transmitted during the incident, 250 firefighters responded including men from "A" & "B" shifts, the fire was classed as a 1 alarmer - Injured were Firefighters William Jett, who slipped down a ladder & injured his leg, & Hanse Morgan, both from T-3, whose shoulder was hurt while lifting a generator - The fire completely destroyed the aft superstructure that divides the oil tank area in the forward section, which was undamaged, & contains the bridge & navigation instruments in addition to the Officers' quarters - More than 2,500 gallons of foam concentrate was sprayed on the fire, enough to spread a 10" layer on an area the size of a football field. (TUH)

1982: 7 Alarms - Box#14-851 - 3440 Fairfield Rd - Fairfield (South Baltimore) - Fire involved the Alcolac, Incorporated Chemical Plant - 1 firefighter was seriously burned. (CHM1)
