CINCINNATI, OH:
CINCINNATI FIRE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
DISTRICT 3
Media Contact:
District Chief Randy Freel (513)352-2333
Date: 2/24/02
Time: 4:39 P.M.
This is District Chief Denny Clark reporting on a fire at 4890 Spring Grove Ave. in the Winton Place neighborhood of Cincinnati. The initial dispatch was to investigate an automatic sprinkler alarm. First arriving fire companies found a large column of smoke coming from the rear of the Specialty Envelope Company. Due to the volume of smoke and the large amount of combustible paper products in the industrial complex a "2nd Alarm" was transmitted which summoned a total of 49 firefighters and support personnel.
The initial "Size Up" revealed a fire on a rear outside dock, up against the exterior of the large paper envelope manufacturing building. The fire originated in stored paper and wooden pallets and was being partially controlled by an overhead sprinkler system. Total extinguishment was quickly accomplished by firefighter's hand lines laid to the fire from pumpers.
The second alarm companies were quickly returned to service while remaining firefighters remained on scene for over an hour removing smoke which had entered the factory. No one was injured in the blaze. The cause of ignition is undetermined at this time but Fire Investigators are looking at possible vandalism. Initial estimates of damage has been set at $2,000
Questions may be directed to District Chief Randy Freel (513)352-2333 or Fire Investigations Captain Dan Rottmueller at (513)352-1685
