============================== =======

***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***

for March 3rd:

1943: 5 Alarms - Box#37 - 1900hrs - Lafayette & Arlington Aves - Lafayette Square (Northwest Of Downtown) - Fire involved the 63 year old Saint John's African Methodist Episcopal Church - The church was an inferno inside & flames quickly burst through the roof, as 5 alarms were sounded - The bitter cold & gale force winds caused the flames to devour the old imposing stone edifice - Firefighters noticed 1 of the ornamental spires @ the rooftop shaking in the high winds - T-10 was in position with its Hayes aerial ladder extended directly under the perilous stones - Firefighters performed a remarkable feat, in slowly moving the ladder truck, inch by inch, braving the sudden death by walking the brace ladder with the movement of the rig - Scarcely had this been accomplished, when the spire came tumbling down, & the Hayes truck would have been crushed to pieces - After an all night battle, the fire was extinguished & only the walls were left standing. (TUH)

1954: Box#6546, Hawkins Point & Fort Smallwood Rds (Hawkins Point - South Baltimore), sounded @ 1331hrs for a field fire on Hawkins Point Rd - E-35 collided with a 10 ton truck @ Pennington Ave & Church St - The apparatus was struck in the left side & the engine spun around throwing Firefighter William H. Grief off the back step - He struck the curb & suffered a compound fracture of the skull - Firefighter Theodore Heying was injured as he too, landed in the street - Firefighter Grief died in the accident room of South Baltmore General Hospital - He was buried on 3/8/1954 @ Loudon Park Cemetery. (TUH*CHM1)

1961: 5 Alarms - Box#1738 - 1900 S Quail St - Colgate (Southeast Baltimore) - Fire involved the Anchor Motor Freight Company. (CHM1)

1961: 6 Alarms - Box#529 - 1903hrs - 104-106 S Charles St - Downtown - Fire involved the 5 story brick Mentzel Paper Company - E-15 responded to investigate the sounding of Box#529 & 1 minute later Lieutenant Theodore Duvall radioed for the box to be struck out after discovering smoke showing - The fire was started on the 3rd floor of the building by an incendiary, & 6 alarms were sounded by 1924hrs - High Pressure Service monitor pipes & hand lines darkened the fire down sufficiently to enable firefighters to enter the building, when suddenly & without warning, the High Pressure System water pressure died off to a trickle, causing the fire to gain in intensity & force firefighters back out of the building - After a lapse of 2 minutes, the system returned to full force, but once again, the shutdown happened for a duration of another 2 minutes - Later, for the 3rd time, another shutoff occurred - Hand lines were able to contain the blaze, which produced acrid white smoke & forced firefighters to wear masks - Acting Chief Roland F. Wett stated: "The failure of the High Pressure Service was expensive to us, & had a definite effect on the fire. It would have been under control a half hour sooner, otherwise". - Lieutenant Duvall was injured fighting the fire, & investigation found a jammed cut-off valve in the street bed had caused the collapse of the High Pressure System water pressure. (CHM1*TUH)

1972: 5 Alarms - Box#6543 - 0628hrs & 4 Alarms On Anne Arundel County Box#121 - 6401 Chemical Rd - Fire involved the Haynie Oil Products Company - E-57 & *T-28* (note: Co's with "*" have since been disbanded) were dispatched on a silent alarm to investigate an explosion in the vicinity of the U. S. Coast Guard Depot - ADT automatic Box#121 was struck out by Anne Arundel County @ 0629hrs - Lieutenant Thomas Freeburger, E-57, radioed for city Box#6543 @ 0631hrs, as a red glow lit up the horizon - The 1st alarm consisted of *E-10*, E-35, E-58, T-21, *Chemical Co#2*, & BC-6 - Lieutenant Thomas E. Ford, E-58, radioed for a 3rd alarm @ 0639hrs - The 2nd alarm companies were E-2, *E-12*, E-26, *E-37*, T-6, BC-5, *High Expansion Foam Unit#2*, Rescue-1, *Flood Light Unit#1*, Air Cascade #1, & *Mobile Hospital Unit#1* - The 3rd alarm companies were *E-15*, *E-17*, E-55, *T-19*, *DC-1*, & *Tank Wagon #1 (Fuel Truck)* - Anne Arundel County struck out a 3rd alarm @ 0644hrs - BC-6, George E. Moeller, ordered a 4th alarm @ 0645hrs & special called the fireboat "August Emrich" *(E-48)* - The 4th alarm consisted of E-27, *E-32*, *E-38*, *E-48*, T-23, BC-2, & *BC-31 (Marine Battalion Chief)* - A 5th alarm from city Box#6543 @ 0710hrs brought E-5, E-20, & E-21 to the scene & finally a 4th alarm was ordered by Anne Arundel County DC Paul Haigley @ 0736hrs - An exploding vat of paint ingredients set off the blaze in the huge plant, located in Anne Arundel County, but accessible through a city street only, & @ the same time knocked out the sprinkler piping that protected the sprawling structure - A towering column of the most foul smelling smoke was seen for miles around as tanks of menhaden fish oil burned fiercely & great balls of flames leaped skyward in the early dawn - Chief Harry W. Klasmeier & DC Alvin W. Lenz, both of the Anne Arundel County FD, said "the joint operation of both Departments worked to perfection" - The big problem came afterwards as the maze of oozing, sticky, oil wet hose had to be untangled, taxing the firefighters' patience & ingenuity while separating the city from the county. (CHM1*TUH)

1990: 2 Alarms + Special Call 7 Medics(2, 10, 13, 18, 5, 6, 13 a 2nd time), EMS Super(3), & 1 Engine(5) - Box#2348 - 0347hrs - 2000 O'Dell Ave - Hollander Ridge (East Baltimore) - Fire involved the 7th floor of the Hollander Ridge public housing high rise - The fire was caused by a flammable liquid that someone poured in the hallway - It produced heavy black smoke & caused a lot of anxiety for the residents.
