What are your preconnects? Diameter/length? Type of nozzle?

Both our engines are setup with:
1 - 100' 1 3/4" with TFT automatic (front jump line)
1 - 150' 1 3/4" with TFT automatic (crosslay - foam preconnect)
1 - 200' 1 3/4" with TFT automatic (crosslay - water only)
1 - 200' 2 1/2" with adjustable nozzle (just ordered new smooothbore)

All our preconnects are 1.75" w/task force nozzles. The lengths are either 150' or 200'.

same as shamrocks, but we also have a 150' 2 1/2 on our main pumper. everything else has at 2 preconnects. our brush truck has a 100' (not really sure) 1 1/2

iceman4442
04-10-2002, 07:51 PM
Pumper has: 1 100' 1 1/2" w/TFT
2 200' 1 3/4" w/TFT or Akron Saberjet (occasionally
find a smooth bore on one, depending on who loads
hose!)
1 200' 2 1/2" w/automatic nozzle

Also have a "school line" 150' 2 1/2" w/ wye on the end.

Stay safe.

Engine 1: 4- 1 1/2" 200' preconnects, 2 for each side of truck.
1- 2 1/2" 200' preconnect off back hosebed.
700' of 2 1/2" hose with a wye at the end, called the "appartment lay" for long driveways, etc.
700' or so of 4" stortz soft suction hose for water supply.

Engine 2: Basically the same as Engine 1.

Engine 3: 2- 1 1/2" 200' preconnects off the back.
1- 2 1/2" 200' preconncect of the back.
500' or so of 2 1/2" hose with a wye on the end.

All of our engines are loaded with:

150' 1 3/4" crosslay - TFT
200' 1 3/4" crosslay - TFT
200' 2 1/2" attack line - TFT
200' 3" line with a water thief
500' 5" supply line (not preconnected)

I have to admit, my numbers get fuzzy from the 2 1/2" up. It may be more or less hose than I have listed. But that's roughly the lengths we have. It seems like we have so much more 5" line than we probably do, when you're the one repacking it.

Both our engines have 2, 1 3/4(200ft) preconnects with smooth bore nozzles as well as a 75ft 1 3/4 trash line. Our first due rig has 200ft of 2 1/2 with a smooth bore nozzle as well. Finnaly, they each have 250ft of 3/4 inch booster line, which is good for very small brush fires, but that`s about it, usualyl the trash line gets pulled. On our new rig we decided to trash the booster line all together.

Another idea about a booster line is going with an 1 1/2" booster reel. A 100'x 1 1/2" reel is a little smaller than a 200'x 1" reel and will flow much more water. Just a thought.

Hmm, I appreciate your opinion and I`ll try bringing it up again, but we`re so close to ordering that it`s really too late. Also, when the commitee realized how much money we could save by cutting it out, they decided it was expendable, that`s how tight our budget is, and if we don`t get this rig soon we`ll be in a very serious situation. Not only that, but the fact that we haven`t used a booster line in years really made it seem unneccesary. We`ll still have the one on our current first due rig, which will become the second due if there`s some situation where it`s really needed.

One of the most expensive firefighting components on a fire truckis a booster reel, cost per gallon isout of this world, what couldn't a pressurized water extinguisher do on that matress or better yet a 1 3/4" line at 1/7th the cost of the booster?

That's fine if you want to drag out and repack a 1.75 for everything, but being shorthanded and inherently lazy I enjoy being able to apply water to small problems with a 1" at a moderate rate then push a button to pickup my hose.Pump and roll w/hard red is handy. If you don't like 'em don't use them but we won't buy another pumper without at least one reel. Quint,I also noticed you've only got 100' on your lines, short drives or small houses?I couldn't reach half of our jobs with less than 150'.T.C.

A new engine cost $300,000+ and you are worried about the price of the booster reel? The a/c unit is the most expensive item when you talk gpm/price. A booster reel can be a useful tool on an engine if you use it for what it was designed for.

All of out units have 200 and 250 feet of 1 3/4 hose with selectable gallonage nozzles . One unit does have auto nozzles. Each engine also has 100 feet of 1 3/4 trash line as well with selectable gallonage nozzles as well. Also the 2 engines have 250 feet of 2.5 inch hose and 1 has a smoothbore nozzle and one selectable gallaonage nozzle

In our case, yes. It doesn`t make any sense to spend money on something that we simply don`t use. If for some reason we need 200 feet of hose to get to a fire that only needs as much water as what a booster line flows it would be so rare a circumstance that we might as well just stretch a line, it`ll be good practice anyways.

From the front of the truck:

Front Bumper trash line: 100' of 1 3/4" with a 70 gpm low pressure nozzle. Mainly used on vehicle fires, etc.

Front & Rear crosslay: 200' of 1 3/4" with TFT nozzles

Rear preconnect: 200' 1 3/4" with a 4' piercing applicator. Extra TFT nozzle can be added if 3rd handline required.

"A new engine cost $300,000+ and you are worried about the price of the booster reel?"

Heck it only costs the same as a thermal imager or two airpacks, or an automatic accountability system, a rear vision and head up display see through smoke system, a 10 KW generator, a se of JAWS, a kitchen in the cab, 100 extra horse power and a retarder, all of the hose and your deck gun on the rig, a foam system, a Lite CAF system, ....YEAH WHAT THE HECK EVERY PROGRESSIVE DEPARTMENT ALREADY HAS ALL THAT STUFF ON EVERY RIG ANYWAY probably for 5 to 10 years, right?????

So what did you get for your $300,000 in 2002, shall we compare? Did you get a custon cab with seating for 6 and interior EMS compartment, double A/C, a federal growler, a 2000 gpm deck gun, arrow stick, 5 preconnects, ladder to the deck gun, coffin compartments, a couple LDH outlets with electric valves, a couple MIV intakes, a massive 2250 gpm foam system, two tone paint, 450 HP motor and large transmission, exhaust brake, 2250 gpm pump, two foam tanks, 750 gallons of water, 10 KW generator, five flood lights and a power cord reel, a SEVEN year fleet defect no exceptions coverage warranty, complete reflective trim on the whole back end, battery charger, lots of striping, unit names, lots of 12 volt scene lights, bus mirrors, raised exhaust, was all your equipment mounted by the builder, did all the loose equipment come with the rig too, were the radio already wired? The preceeding cost $294,000 and came with a booster reel.

BFD45

The reason for the 3 reels of 1.5" is simple the unit will be 1st due interface and highway. Many times you have to pull 200ft of hose and you only need 50'. The reel makes this easy. Also in interface fires you often need to relocate the vehicle. The reel will allow you to wind up quick and relocate and deploy again. The Idea also was to eliminte any hose beds and keep the guys on the ground as much as possible. As such the rear hose bed is also gone and is replace by narrow deep hose trays on each side of the tank for 2.5" and 4".

Now we realize the with the reels our operating pressures will increase to allow for the coiling around the reel. So instead of working at 130psi we will be around 150 psi. No big deal.

As far as the reels cost it's not that bad. The biggest cost is the Reeltex hose. Solid hose but very light and supper smooth on the inside. A fraction of the wieght of the old rubber hose. And if all goes well should be a 1 time purchase.

Here's a shot of a similar unit that we are using for our base.
