I recently spoke with a fellow female firefighter that works for a neighboring department. She told me that her department is not allowing her light-duty during her pregnancy. They told her she had to return to shift or use her own sick time. In the past, her department has assigned light duty but said they are not going to now. I work for Lansing Fire Department and we are placed on light-duty as soon as we announce our pregnancy. Unfortunately, her department will not allow us to be used for comparison due to difference in size. I am looking for information from other departments (preferrably with min. manpower of 15-20) as to the handling of this matter. I will also gladly accept any information regarding pregnancy and firefighting and the safety issues involved.

If you would like to contact me directly, my email address is tcdre@myexcel.com

I beleive according the the FLSA and the EEO as well as the ADA they have to provide some sort of provisions as long as the doctor says she can work. I know some jurisdictions my assign them to office positions and I have also heard that some may temporarily assign them to another branch of the government until complete. I also believe there are some other maternity rules and regs. However, if they ahve done it in the past, she has em by the shorts... By doing it before, they set a precedent. Does the authority having jurisdiction in this case have a policy on pregnancy and re-assignment or maternity leave? Most places do now days. Is it IAFF? Lots of avenues to explore.

Good luck to her.
