Bad idea, 5 inch is big enough.

What is the capacity of your pumper?
You can get 2000gpm through 5" (about 25 psi loss per 100). That is more than most water systems can give. Depending on your area 4" is all the water most departments need. In a pinch you can move 4", very hard with 5".
I've only heard of industry using 6". (tank farm, refinery, etc.)

7 1/4", 8 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch hose will take water a bit further too. Like 3000 gpm 5 miles.

Billy,
Need to evaluate your needs/operations and make the decision based on that determination. I can tell you in my neck of woods, there was 6", 5", and 4" back in the beginning for LDH. I think you could say that 5" has pretty much become the standard here for LDH.

For a city dept on a hydrant system i think 5" is over kill, its too damn big and its stuck wherever it is charged, and most water supplies wont give you over 1500 anyway. 4" would be the best choice, you can still move it if necessary and it maches most cities water systems. I used to love using 3", which was more than enough water for a house fire and quick and versatile, cant use it anymore though, the desk jockies took them off our rigs :(.
