Anyone using the Saberjet nozzle? Comments? Any actual fire combat experience with it?

We used a saberjet at a live burn exercise. If the nozzle is used right it works well. The key was letting the pump operator know when you were switching over to straight stream or fog. And training the nozzlemen not to open the bail unless they are going to use the solid stream. We are out fitting our stand pipe kits with these. We had hoped for just straight smooth bores but the head red still believes in using fog for protection. Burn something and try them out

We also used one for a live burn drill. We were very disappointed with it's performance. Beside the fact jt4 mentions of letting the pump operator know what you are doing, the smooth bore stream was terrible. We placed it side by side with a TFT automatic, and the TFT seemed to have a better straight stream. (more reach, narrower stream, "better" look) As a fog nozzle, it was Ok, nothing special there. I know training and retraining will be necessary, as we placed some firefighters on the nozzle and they had trouble remembering not to use the bale to shut off the nozzle, lots of "oops" with that function. Yes, if you train on it guys will learn to work that nozzle differently than all the rest of your nozzles unless you use these exclusivly. Imagine this, you are inside a fire and need to shutdown and back out...which nozzle do I have so I know how to shut it down?

Again, try it, train with it, if you like it and it works for your situations...use it.

don't like it at all.
too easy for people not familier with it to screw it up. also twice at one fire someone hit the nozzle (not the bale) with thier foot during overhaul and it turned on.

We had a couple for demo's and we also found them to be confusing for the people that do not run much. We just simply went with the turbojet nozzle with solid bore orfices installed in them, and all we got do is quickly take of the head. It seems to work easier for us all. Hey Bones, we tried the TFT also, but the darndest thing happended all the time.We could never completely get the nozzle open all the way, and if ya looked down through the barrel the orfices weren't always where they were supposed to be. Maybe we had some bad ones, but that was our experience and deciding point to go with Turbojets

KEEP DOING IT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS!!!!!!

Here is the best soap-box preaching I can do:
Again, try it, train with it, if you like it and it works for your situations...use it.
