Glenn, on our 1st out rigs we have a tool bag a little longer than the length of our recip saws. It's got a wide center compartment in which we carry a Dewalt 24 volt saw (with battery) and a Glas-master windshield saw(with a center punch in the handle). The bag also has vertical tool slots in which we carry a set of Klein cable cutters, trauma shears, and at least 5 x 9in. Torch blades. We also carry at least 2 of the compact space blankets in the bag for initial patient covering. Probably going to soon add a set of Zmag's tire deflation chucks to each bag as well. The bag makes it easy to have our most commonly used extrication handtools available quickly, and saves us a trip back to the rig to fetch the toolbox.

Our "IC" bags carry pretty much the same tools in each bag:

- sprung loaded centre punch
- cable cutters
- channel lock pliers
- valve stem remover
- seat belt cutter

There is an IC bag in 3 out of 4 of our trucks, the Tanker being the exception to the rule. Its usually the only truck to "stay home" unless the incident involves a full blown fire.

Our kit in our rescue is a small toolbox.

It contains:
* 6x pairs nitrile gloves
* 6x ear plugs
* 1x trauma shears
* 1x side cutters
* 1x pliers
* 1x shifter (adjustable spanner)
* 1x 12" telescopic mirror
* 1x multi grips
* 1x mould grips
* 1x ring cutter
* 1x centre punch
* 1x window hammer
* 1x stanley knife
* 1x glass removing tool (Not sure of the proper name!)
* 1x roll 2" tape
* 1x laerdral resus mask

I think thats it....

Excellent Ideas all!

You might also add some loops or lengths of 1" webbing for tying off flapped roofs, doors, or pulling pedals, etc.

We carry webbing and ratchet straps, but they are kept with the main extrication gear in the truck.

This might be a strange question, Lutan, but do you mean by "multi grips" and "mould grips", also for what application do you use the "ring cutter"? I suspsect some of these tool names are local words, like spanner vs wrench, but I ask just in case, cuz ya know I'm kinda nosey sometimes. :)

Multi-grips- just like an adjustable spanner, but rely on the user squeezing the handles together to keep the pressure on them.

Mould grips- similar to the multi's, but you can lock the tool onto the item being undone. (Such as on a nut or bolt head)

Ring cutter- a tool that has a small tongue that slides between a ring band and the flesh of the finger. You then start to manually spin a diamond blade and can cut through the band to release it from the finger.

I'll get some photos- its easier than trying to explain!

Ok, lets see if I have the descriptions right here:

Multi grips - I think we would think of those as channel lock pliers (I think). Ours are adjustable to a variety of size openings, sounds similar anyway.

Mould grips - sounds a lot like using vice grips here. Again, use description matches more or less to stuff we use.

Seems mostly a difference between using the Queens English and North American English (spanner = wrench and stuff like that)

The ring cutter has really intrigued me now. I can see the obvious uses for it, but have never heard of one out this way, although I am sure that there is a similar device in someone's tool box.

Standing by for the photos - that will explain much, I think. Thanks Lutan.

You can buy ring cutters commercially from places like Dyna-Med and such. We carry one in our squad but to my knowledge, we have only used it once to remove a wire tie a child had secured on his finger. I am curious how much one gets used for rescue operations to justify the space it takes up in your jump bag?
