Here in the Nations Capital:
Firefighter, EMT, Paramedic, Sgt, Lt, Capt - All wear black helmets (issue 1010's). The only difference is the cresent with the rank/specialty on the back and the rank/specialty on the shield.
BFC, DFC, AFC and (presumably... because I dont know anyone who has seen our current FC in gear!) FC wear white helmets.
The reason the rank and file wear black is because our (soon to be history!) FC couldn't tell the Chief and line officers apart on a fireground.
In my previous life, with the Houston, Texas Fire Department:
Black Ben Franklins for Firefighters and Chauffers
Red Ben Franklins for Captains and Senior Captains
White Ben Franklins for Distrct Chief, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief and Fire Chief.

Realising the traditional aspect of helmets, the main reason we changed to yellow from black was to be seen in a smoke filled room.
Personaly I am a lot happier being seen by somebody else when the furs flying.

We apparently use the KISS rule. Our colors are red, red, and red. Some officers have decals on their helmets that show their titles, but not all. It's not really difficult to tell people apart when you have VERY FEW volunteers.

WASHINGTON, DC JUST WENT TO A NEW STYLED HELMET (CAIRNS 1010) THE HELMET COLOR IS BLACK FOR ALL RANKS (EMS, FF,SGT, LT, CAPT) AND WHITE FOR THE RANKS OF BFC,DFC, ASST.CH, FC. PERSONALLY I THINK THE IDEA IS SILLY, I THINK THAT ALL OFFICERS SHOULD BE WHITE AND FIREFIGHTERS FIREFIGHTERS SHOULD BE BLACK... JUST MY OPINION.
BACK IN THE DAY DC HELMET STANDARDS WERE THIS: YELLOW FOR FIREFIGHTERS, WHITE FOR OFFICERS (SGT THRU FIRE CHIEF), ORANGE FOR EMS.
