What kind of head/face protection do you provide for patients packaged in basket style stretchers (or a Sked)? How do you proved pretection from falling rocks, intense sun, etc?

We use a plastic litter shield nearly everytime the patient is strapped into the litter.
Since it is hinged at the top and velcroed at the sides there is quick/easy access to the subjects head.

We have used a helmet in some cases, but only when there is no head/neck/upper torso injury and there is a reason not to use the shield -or - the litter is not compatible w/the shield.

Sun protection can be a challenge but a light weight/opaque block can be used (e.g., tape some 4x4s to the outside of the shield).

The shields are effective - I've seen one take a breadloaf sized rock from 15 feet. The shield cracked and was ruined but did its job.

I've never used the shield. We use a helmet and safety glasses. The Petzl Ecrin sits close enough to the head that immobilization hasn't been a problem.

This is not intended to be in info-mercial. We have found that the Gath water rescue helmet is excellent!!!! The Ecrin-Roc sits too far from the back of the head and is uncomfortable. The Gath fits like a football helmet and has a "sunglass dark" shield that is retractable.
