Hi how is everyone.....I am new to this forum I just found it on the web. Just wondering if everyone here is American? and fellow Canadians? I was recently hired(1 year ago) with the Mississauga Fire Department(city just West of Toronto, Ontario), there was 4 females in my recruit class of 24 people. There is now a total of 9 female firefighters of approx. 625 total. I am happy to say I have had nothing but great experiences so far, I have gotten myself involved in many department extra-curricular activities such as pick up hockey, soccer and I have been competing in the Firefighter Combat Challenge Competitions(does anyone here do that??) I have always been extremly fit and very strong so I think I have gained the respect of the 'guys' that way as well as the fact that growing up I was a 'tomboy' and always got along great with guys.....luckily I have not come across any male chauvinistic attitudes. I think this is the best job in the world I have had a perma smile since i was hired sept 2001.

I appreciate the fact that women are actually being successful at getting hired on as firefighters and as paramedics, and police women. This is a great appreciation, as, trying to prove that these careers are for both women and men, can at times be a bit frustrating to prove! CONGRATULATIONS THOUGH, and welcome aboard!
