Dave..if you get any info, can you forward it to me? We have two firefighters of the female gender on my department, and it's nice to plan ahead for the possibility of a pregnacny as opposed to waiting until a firefighter does get pregnant and let the chips fall where they may!

At my department, each pregnancy is treated according to how the firefighter is handling the job. If the mother-to-be has her ob/gyn agree that she can do the job without harmimg the baby, then she is allowed to work on the floor until she is uncomfortable. In other instances, if there is a problem with the pregnancy, the firefighter can work on light-duty dispatch(just as an injured firefighter would). The next step would be to follow sick leave policy for those that must stay at home. We are treated fairly and must undergo a physical by the ob/gyn and also the city physician. Then men here are also allowed paid family medical leave for up to six weeks when the spouse delivers a child.
Louisiana Law allows for firefighters to have up to 365 paid sick days in a career. Each department throughout the state interprets this differently. I was fortunate in that I did not miss a day of pay during my pregnancy. I delivered 2 children safely this way and with the least amount of stress. I returned to work exactly 6 weeks after each pregnancy.
I hope this example helps you out.

Oh geez!
I forgot a very important research link for this post. Please check out the studies listed with http://www.wfsi.org (www.wfsi.org)
If they don't have the information, they can probably help you find it.
