View Full Version : Possibility of a grant if no Dear John?

Webteam,
It was stated that FEMA would send out the 7,500 definite Dear John letters over a 7 to 10 day period. This started and included August 7. Does this mean that if you have not received a Dear John letter by the end of the day tomorrow, August 16th, that you have a possibility, however slight, of receiving a grant?

Lets see;
19500 Applications
7500 "Dear John" Letters
= 12000 Departments for roughly 5000 grants
That gives you a 41.66% chance at this point, if they indeed have finished sending the letters out.
And had the additional funding made it, it would have been a 58.33% chance

Man, I hope that your theory is true FF1798.

I dont think the odds are that good. You need to factor in the 744 departments that have already got their awards.

Thast true Toddmcbr, good call!
It would be 11,256 Departments vying for 4,256 awards, which would be
37.81% :(

You were suppose to tell me I was wrong. I don't like that percentage near as much as liked the other ones.
Patiently waiting......

I hear ya!
I have triple the anxiety as I wrote grants for three departments..
I was successful last year with one grant for training ($23,000). I pretty much followed the rules in the Federal Register and tried to use the same wording that was in the objectives for that category. Our other grant (We were allowed 2 per department) for the brush truck didn't make it and we still haven't recieved a "Dear John" letter for it! There I was, checking the FEMA website everyday, kinda like now... sigh

Apparently they are not done with the dear john letters!
Just recieved one :( Still Pacing and crossing fingers for the other 2...
Wasn't expecting that at 10:00 p.m....

If you are reading this forum I would advise you not to and get out immediately. It is bad luck. I too just got a letter. I guess I spoke to soon I posted about all the letters being sent out. I'm very disappointed to say the least.
Good luck to the rest you. I hope your worthy projects get funded.

Geesh i'm afraid to check my mail now. I usually check it before i read the forumposts but for some reason i checked this out first. As of 2000 hrs last night i hadnt heard anything, but, that doesnt mean anything since it appears FEMA is working the late shift on some of these letters. Sorry to hear that you were turned down. Good Luck next year. I'm almost positive i'll be posting again in a few minutes after i check my mail *sighs*. Be SAFE

Dear Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program Applicant:
On behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United
States Fire Administration (USFA), I would like to thank you for applying for a
grant under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. Unfortunately, due to
the overwhelming interest in this program we are not able to fund your
application at this time. As you may know, we received nearly 19,600
applications totaling over $2.2 billion in requested assistance from fire
departments across the country. Because of the extremely high volume of
applications and the amount of funding actually available, many of the
applicants who demonstrated great need and worthy project proposals could not
receive awards this year.
Need i say More. Looking forward to Next year. And hey at least the agony is over. Good luck to all others remaining and most of all BE SAFE.

Well, I think I can account for the odds of getting an award. I just got off the phone with a FEMA rep. (to complain about not having access to my application online) and I asked him when the "Dear John" letters will stop being sent. This guy says that they will be sent out until December and the ones we are talking about are only for this round of rejections. So, either way, we will all know one way or another how we stand.
