PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) - A brush fire briefly threatened homes in
rural Leona Valley Sunday night as it consumed 105 acres in an area
of small ranch houses and orchards in north Los Angeles County,
authorities said.
The fire was contained about 10:30 p.m., said Fire Capt. Brian
Jordan. There were no injuries reported, and no evacuations were
ordered, he said.
The fire broke out at 5 p.m. on Bouquet Canyon Road. Its cause
was under investigation, Jordan said.
More than 200 firefighters, along with six water-dropping
helicopters fought the blaze.
Farther south, firefighters surrounded a wildfire that scorched
765 acres of mostly scrub and desert brush in eastern San Diego
County.
Flames erupted about 12:15 p.m. Saturday and was contained by 6
p.m. Sunday, according to the U.S. Forest Service. About 50
off-road vehicle enthusiasts had to leave a recreational area. No
one was hurt.
The dry bed of Lake Morena, largely emptied by drought, was
itself on fire, said California Department of Forestry spokeswoman
Laura Lowes.
The lake bed helped firefighting efforts because plants still
held moisture.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
About 800 firefighters backed by 11 aircraft and two bulldozers
fought the blaze.
