Not to sound like a whiner, but I sure could use some help(advice)on an AD pay rating problem.I served on 2 fires this summer, both I was dispatched as a hand crew EMT.I performed the normal firefighter duties coupled with crew Emt duties. I carried the normal line red pack and performed various ems functions from headaches to blisters to cuts to a seriuos shortness of breath. I was under the assumtion that EMT rating was an AD5. And was shocked to find out after the fact that I was paid AD2. Thats a difference of $18.76/hour. I was informed that AD5 pay is for single resource only. This all is a little backwards,As a single resource you're duties seem to be pretty one dimensional,Where as in a fire fighter/emt you're performing both duties. And also, If someone were in seriuos condition on the line who would stabalize the patient until the line emt arrives on scene? I have come to a dead end on who to contact, nobody within our local USFWL seems to know for sure, and their seems to be alot of grey area concerning this pay schedule. I really enjoy the wildland side of fire and would hate to have to give it up, but I can't afford to give up my regular salary and work for $11.34 an hour. Also any thoughts on AD'S NOT RECEIVING OVERTIME OR HAZARD PAY? Any direction would be of great help.THANKS!

I run into the same problem. As a handcrew, during the registration process I've always been asked medical training, and I inform them that I'm EMT certified. I don't exactly understand why we don't get the same pay as an independant resource as we do as a handcrew for the same job, but I also don't mind. I understand that as an AD we are an "Emergency Hire" and that we can't recive overtime or hazard pay due to our contract.

I am not aware of how you hired on; e.g. an emergency crew through the state or feds. I am aware of certified emts on eff crews that are hired at a higher AD rate than the remaining FFT2s. I am not aware that any of them were higher than an AD 3 but could have been. Your statement is correct, that as a single resource EMTs at all 3 levels are listed as AD5; however you are hired primarily as a firefighter and I think that is why the pay disparity. If you are hired on as an EMT you would work for the Medical Unit, and actually do less work for higher pay. Does this sound like a government job or what?
