LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Monday, September 30, 2002 at 1718 Hours (5:18 PM PDT), ten Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one LAFD Rescue Ambulance, one LAFD Helicopter and two Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Tim Manning, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 23314 West Collins Street in Woodland Hills. The first Company to arrive on scene reported heavy smoke showing from a large one-story single-family dwelling. Firefighters commenced aggressive vertical ventilation while mounting a brisk and decisive interior assault on the flames, which had taken hold of attic space within the 4,000 square-foot tile-roofed home. As the fire spread quickly beneath them, it profoundly compromised structural integrity of the roof, forcing Firefighters to refocus the entirety of their efforts within the structure. The fire was ultimately confined to the attic and extinguished in just 34 minutes. Displaced by the fire were two adults and two children, a housekeeper and family dog. No injuries were reported. Thanks to well-coordinated salvage efforts, fire loss was held to $625,000 ($500,000 structure & $125,000 contents). The cause of the fire is listed as accidental and attributed to the first-time use of a fireplace within the renovated structure.
