LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM RUBBISH FIRE:
On Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at 0423 Hours (4:23 AM PDT), fifteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, the LAFD Tractor Company, three Chief Officer Command Teams and various support units, all under the direction of 12th Battalion Commander Bruce Barber responded to a Greater Alarm Rubbish Fire near 13812 West Saticoy Street in the Van Nuys area. The first Company arrived quickly on scene to discover a disorderly pile of railroad ties measuring 100’ long by 25’ wide by 6’ tall and fully involved with fire. Firefighters using handlines and heavy-stream appliances deluged the stubborn blaze with a combination of water and foam, bringing the bulk of the fire under control in less than 47 minutes. No structures were threatened, and there were no injuries. LAFD bulldozers were later used to skillfully manipulate and assist in full extinguishment of the creosote treated lumber, which was believed to be waste material removed from railroad service. The value of the burned material was to be determined by Union Pacific Railroad officials, while the cause of the fire remains listed as under investigation.
LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at 0503 Hours (5:03 AM PDT), eight Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances and two Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of 11th Battalion Commander Roderick Garcia responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 1159 South Ardmore Avenue in Koreatown. The first Company to arrive on scene reported smoke showing from the upper floor of a two-story apartment building serving as a Board and Care facility for the disabled. Firefighters using handlines mounted a swift assault on the fire, confining the flames to the one unit and extinguishing the flames in just 24 minutes. Though physically uninjured, a 42 year-old male occupant of the involved unit displayed aberrant behavior. Later determined to be an insulin-dependent diabetic suffering from hypoglycemia, he was transported to Hospital of the Good Samaritan in good condition. Loss from this fire is estimated at $4,000 ($3,000 structure & $1,000 contents). The cause of this early morning blaze is attributed to the man’s careless behavior with smoking materials.
