HARTFORD, Vt. (AP) - A British tourist was killed when he fell
into Quechee Gorge while hiking with his brother, police said.
The identity of the 62-year-old man has not been released.
Hartford Police Detective Sgt. Shawn Lundrigan said the man was
hiking Wednesday around noon on the west side of the dam when the
accident happened. He and his brother were on the opposite side of
the river from the gorge gift shops and upriver of the gorge
bridge, near the Deweys Mills area.
The gorge is 165 feet deep at its deepest point.
"They were both down there walking and sightseeing," Lundrigan
said. "They were on their way back home. A preliminary
investigation shows that possibly the deceased fell or had some
kind of medical problem."
Police and a special rescue team carried the man out using ropes
and a rescue basket.
The incident is still being investigated, and the man's body has
been sent to Burlington for an autopsy.
The victim's brother lives in the Boston area, police said.
