November 8, 2002 -- The crowds have gone home and the winners' checks have been handed out - but the last contestant of the New York Marathon won't cross the finish line until today.
Lloyd Scott, a 40-year-old former fireman from England, is making the epic, weeklong trek weighted down by a 130-pound 1940s diving suit.
Scott, a cancer survivor, said he is running "The Slowest New York Marathon" to raise money to help fight leukemia and to aid children of firefighters lost on 9/11.
"I decided to wear the diving suit because it is quite simply the worst thing that anyone could do a marathon in," joked Scott, who sees his brass and rubber singlet as metaphor for the disease he whipped.
"It's a good example of what it's like for cancer and leukemia sufferers because it's slow and painful - but like me they'll win out in the end."
Scott has been spending each night in a city firehouse. Each day he can do little more than shuffle down the street in the suit, covering only about 4.5 miles with the help of a support crew.
He is expected to cross the finish line in Central Park at about noon.
A former professional soccer goalie, Scott says he raised $1.5 million to fight cancer at the London Marathon last April.
In addition to the British Cancer and Leukemia in Childhood fund, Scott is also raising money for Uniformed Firefighters Association Scholarship Fund.
