I don't know if you are interested in wildland firefighting, but there are a lot of openings. We are experiencing several years of drought and they are trying to build up some of the crews for this summer.

Where are there openings? In Durango? I'd like to find out because I'm trying to get hired. I even took the S-130/S-190 course here in FL to hopefully help me get hired.

Email me and I can send you the contact number for the Chief and our personnel people. Last time I checked we had about a dozen openings. We are in the process of opening a new station. But remember, we will soon have a lot of old guys retiring, so more are on the way. What we are really hurting for is IFSAC certified Fire Inspectors.

The only real pre-requisite is that you be an IFSAC certified or certifiable firefighter, however I have seen them work with guys on getting their certifications if they are a good catch.

The forest serice has several openings in the Durango/Pagosa Springs area. Go to http://www.fs.fed.us/, then click on employment, then job openings, then temporary employment. You can search by location and several other factors.

I am still here! I would encourage you to volunteer for a little while, at least to find out whether it is a job you would want to do. Sometimes it looks better from the outside looking in. You may not like being on the end of the hoseline at 3 o' clock AM wondering whether the roof is going to fall in on you or not.You need to try it to see how the job fits. While you are doing that, you can work on getting firefighter certified. Try to save up and enroll in a local college fire academy.

funny that you say that because i am actually going to a local department after work today to apply for volunteer work. i have talked to them previously and if i get in they will pay for my firefighting classes. thanks for the info and hopefully i will get in asap. it is my cousins old department so hopefully it will be an easier process... :)

By the way, We still have a recruitment in progress for several of our stations. Especially the one in the Socorro area. Go to http://cpol.army.mil/index.html and fill out an online resume. That will get your name in the system. You may have a chance at making the cut as a recruit and not a fully qualified firefighter. Our stations don't run a lot of calls, but you do get to see fire every now and then. They are mainly wildland fire calls and MVA's.

i went to that site and filled out most of the info. but what i didn't understand was the pay grade section... i went to the help menu and it didn't really explain anything.

you know, the section that says lowest acceptable grade and the one after it.... any suggestions??

thanks in advance!

Los Alamos, NM will probably be hiring again towards the end of this year. If you are interested, let me know and I will send you an application form whic you can complete and return to Human Resources, they will keep it on file for six months, after which you can reapply.

As far as pay grades go, the lowest you should put is 04. That is a recruit firefighter. The full code is GS-0081-04. Go ahead and fill it out, at least you will be in the system. It is a GS or General Schedule job. Maybe one or both places will give you a call.

Good luck yet again!
