Pranksters 'bug' Johnson Street Bridge
Times Colonist Tuesday, February 04, 2003
Early-morning commuters Monday on the Johnson Street Bridge were greeted with the sight of a car body hanging from the girders above.
Victoria police Acting Sgt. Todd Wellman said the shell of a Volkswagen bug was suspended from the bridge some time during the night and reported to police at 7:30 a.m.
Signs on the car indicated the prank was the work of engineering students from the University of British Columbia. "It looks like UBC engineers are expanding their boundaries," Wellman said.
He said the car body was "strategically strung" so it hung over the train tracks rather than the well-travelled roadway. Officers and Victoria public works staff were able to get it down in less than an hour.
"Police cordoned off the area to ensure no pedestrians were underneath," Wellman said.
The car was loaded onto a flat-deck truck by city workers and hauled away for demolition.

The Johnson St Bridge is a steel girder, lift bridge located at the norther end of the Victoria Inner Harbour. Pranks like this are seen regularly around the Vancouver area, because that is where the University of British Columbia is located. This is a pretty big stretch of their abilities.
