LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM FIRE:
On Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at 0824 hours (8:24 a.m.) fourteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, six LAFD Rescue Ambulances, four Battalion Command Teams, and other support units, under the direction of Assistant Chief John Ware, responded to a reported structure fire near the intersection of West Romaine Street and North Vine Street in the Hollywood area. First units on the scene reported smoke showing from a DWP electrical distribution station. Initial firefighting operations were hindered due to the fact that the station was not de-energized. With extinguishment pending and toxic smoke emitting from the building and drifting towards a daycare center, Firefighters quickly evacuated the daycare center of approximately seventy-four students and ten teachers to a nearby elementary school. Firefighters worked in concert with DWP workers for approximately two hours to de-energize the station to a point were Firefighters could commence initial extinguishment; Firefighters then entered the structure for a final knockdown. It took Firefighters approximately two-hours and twenty-eight minutes to control and extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire/explosion is under investigation by DWP officials. No dollars is available.

The Chicago Firefighter's Best Friend
"The Chicago Firefighter’s Best Friend" will be the first book to document the role and tradition of Chicago firedogs through real life stories, history, and photography. It will appeal to firefighters, dog lovers, and Chicagoans. We hope to have over 200 pictures and at least 100 firedog narratives assessing the important role dogs have played and continue to play in Chicago firehouses. A percentage of the proceeds generated from book sales will be donated to a charitable organization which assists victims of fires.
