DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Eight Iowa fire departments were awarded
federal funds Wednesday from the U.S. Department of Homeland
Security to increase effectiveness of fire operations and to
support firefighter safety.
The grants announced Sens. Tom Harkin and Charles Grassley, will
help fire departments buy equipment, make fire station
modifications and pay for firefighter safety programs.
"The equipment, technology and training these grants will
support are the key to protecting Iowa's firefighters and our homes
and loved ones," Harkin said.
Fire departments in Allerton, Anamosa, Cylinder, Dunkerton,
Hawkeye, Jewell, Primghar and Waucoma will receive amounts ranging
from $27,000 to $162,000.
The Department of Homeland Security will distribute $750 million
to fire departments across the country by September 2004.
"Firefighters are a critical part of Iowa's communities and we
need to make sure they are adequately equipped to respond to
emergencies," Grassley said.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency
has awarded a total of $226,114 to six Iowa fire departments.
Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, announced the funding Wednesday
for the Brandon, Elgin, Goodell, Laurens, Lawler and North Warren
fire departments.
The grants can be used to train firefighters and purchase
equipment.
"Firefighters make our communities safer and we need to make
sure that they have the equipment they need to protect Iowa
citizens," Grassley said.
The funding is part of the 2003 Assistance for Firefighters
Grant Program, which will distribute $750 million throughout the
year.
