Hey -

I'm in the midst of the process right now. I took the written test in December of 2002, the physical test in August of 2003 and I'm waiting for the test results to be finalized and a list to be established (which we've been told will be this November -- at the earliest) So, it's going to be a little while before the FDNY starts another round of employment. Once they've established the list, they can hire off it for 4 years. More than likely they will start another written test in 2005/6. For more info, check out this link:

Good luck

Martine, goodluck with your application for NYFD,

Do you know how many applicants they had? Just wondering, thanks

Hey Spy -- Thanks for the wishes of good luck.

If I remember correctly, 18,000 took the written test -- of that something over 14,000 passed the written and were allowed to take the physical. It took them over 4 months to conduct the physical tests, so it's been a really slow process. In the end, if I get appointed though, it will all be worth it. Hopefully we should be hearing soon what the next steps in this process are.

Are you thinking of applying to FDNY too?

Do you know what there shift schedule consists of? Is 24-48?

I don';t think it's either. I think they have a split shift -- something like 4 days on, 2 off. There's some guys who are able to arrange it that they work a 24 hour shift, but I don't think it's the norm. Maybe someone else knows about this better....

I dont know the whole system perfectly, but a buddy of mine just got appointed to Engine 317 in St. Albans, and I believe the younger/newer guys work mostly the 9-6 or the 6-9 tour, then have off either 2 or 3 days, and it alternates how many days off depending if you work the night tour or the day tour. Usually the more senior guys get the 24's so it's kind of an earned spot. As far as I know thats how the system goes as best I can understand it. Hope this helps. Any other guys out there going for FDNY drop me a line at FRO516BMX@aol.com It's always good to hear I'm not alone in the wait for this job.

You're definitely not alone

Key word is "wait" -- seems that's our first major task....

Hey martinez24, I am on the same list with you, it seems like forever, I just keep waiting in the mail for my physical score and list number. Anyways, the probies can only work the 12 hour shifts, they can't do mutuals with other guys in the firehouse, hence they can't work a 24.

I'm not sure about the schedule but I believe if the FF is working 24 hour tours it is 1 on , 2 off, 1 on 3 off. = 7 days and the cycle starts again. This is assuming they don't take any overtime.

Goodluck martinez24 and FRO516BMX hopefully I will see you guys around in a few years..
