I am interested in becoming a career firefighter. I am currently a volunteer ff. I have looked into the civil service tests and have discovered that I just missed the exam for a career firefighter. Is there another way that I can have an opportunity of becoming paid without waiting another two years+ for the next test???

Take Any Test You Can!

I believe in taking every test you can get to. Beg, borrow, grovel and do what ever it takes to get to as many tests as possible. Understand the more tests you take, the better you will be at taking tests. Then, when the one you really want comes along, you're dialed up ready to nail that badge.

Cost? Spare me this part. This is an investment in a career position that pays $50,000+ a year with unbelievable benefits way into retirement. Get serious. In case you haven't noticed, there is an army out there trying to get this job. You need every angle to make it happen for you. Just get up, suit up and go do it. It will pay off biggggg in the future. You waste more time and money buying beer and pizza with your friends.

You've got to be kidding me!

I've talked to three candidates recently who had the opportunity to take some killer entry-level tests. They didn't take these tests. When I asked why? They said, I don't want to work there. That would require me to move and my wife won't go, I'm waiting for the only department I want to work for now, or I only test in this region. Don't tell me how bad you want this job and then give me one of these stupid excuses.

I know candidates who have gone out of their state to take tests in preparation for the "city or agency they really want to work for". Guess what? They get offered jobs. How difficult would it be for you to turn a badge down? Guess where they live and work now? And, it's a lot easier to get a job once you have one. I know one candidate who went all the way to Wyoming to get his badge. Now he's testing back in his home state of Washington.

Hey Fire Boy CaptBob is right. I live in Queens NY right now....but guess what I was born and raised in Chicago where i worked for a busy fire dept in the south suburbs. I moved to ny just to get 5 pts added to my score of the process for ff with fdny. Before and during my move I have taken the test for Philly,Gary IND, HarveyIL, Blue Island IL,Boston Mass, CHelsea Mass, Quincy Mass,Woochester Mass. Bridgeport CT. Stamford CT, it goes on, and in the process of trying for Indy IND, Denver Co, KC KT. .....YOU HAVE TO TEST YOUR BALLS OFF ....I think I should be getting fdny I got a 102% if my calculations are right with is a pretty good score. But i am not stopping with the testing cause you can get turned down for the job for no reason.
Good Luck!

I was under the impression that you had to live in a state for at least six months before you could obtain a job there. If not I am going to be ****ed at the person who told me because I lost some good oppertunities.

Right, everyone is an expert. Few if any states do. Some, you have have their state certification. Some cities give extra points to residents. Check out the requirements first.

flameNguns:

Congratulations on your test score. I wish that I could have moved into the city to get the extra 5 points as well, but it wasn't possible right now, At any rate, Have you heard anything since the Physical test? I took mine in mid-August, and still no word on the final results of the Physical test (I'm pretty sure I aced it) or anything else for that matter. Last I heard was when I called the FDNY recruiter hotline and was told "sometime after the New Year"

Just wanted to see if you had heard anything different.

Thanks

Jim

Capt BOB hit it on the Head!!! I am in Michigan.... we have 4 guys relocate to SC to work for a department there...also have another guy that is testing right now for OH....we are an on call Dept here which is great for those that can't/don't want to move...but if you want it full time (I know I do) then you have to do what it takes!
