CaptBob,

Bought and followed your program to the "T" and now I have a problem!

Maybe I'm making something out of nothing but...

I have gotten a conditional job offer from my number one and number two choices!

Here's the problem--my number one choice has given me the conditional offer of employment dependant on the backround check and physical (both of which I expect no problems).

The number two called the same day and asked if I was interested in the job (which is the physical --background already done but did not say the magical words "offer of employment").

I said yes to both since I consider myself hired when I actually am uniformed and on shift.

I REALLY want number one but they are notorious for doing the background very slowly--

Number 2's chief (!) called me yesterday because he heard I was in the running for number one and wanted to clarify that I was still interested in number 2. Apparently, the guy behind me on the list for number two found out I was in the running for number one and put the bug in someone's ear.

My problem is that I WANT number one, but at the same time I don't want to alienate number 2 (which I would take if number one wasn't interested). My fear is that something silly happens to screw up my conditional offer while at the same time my number two goes elsewhere since they think I'm in the running at my number one.

A really good problem to have but after everything I've been through to get to this spot, I'm stressing and don't want to start off on the wrong foot whereever I start!

Thanks in advance!!

Candidates don't believe us when we tell them once they dialed in, they could expect multiple job offers. It is my opinion and experience to go forward with both (no don't let them know of each other unless they ask specifically by name the other department) and make the final decision as the process unfolds. You never know what's going to happen in the hiring process. Follow each job offer until the end of the process with a written offer, after the medical, psych and all the other conditions are removed.. If you like one department better and tell the other one good by, what are you going to do if the one you like doesn't hire you?

One of our candidates got 3 job offers in 8 days. He went forward in all 3, and then made his decision.

This might help making the decision. Take two pieces of paper and draw a line down the center. On the left put all the pros for both departments. On the right put the cons. Listen to what your wife says. Pray. Prayer is where burdens change shoulders. More will
be revealed along with the steps above to help you make a decision. What ever you decide, go through every step of the hiring process for the new department until you have an offer in writing. It’s good experience and you have the ultimate hammer to politely say no or pass on the first round.

Since 40% of firefighter candidates fail the psych, you need to prepare for the psych just like you would for any other portion of the hiring process. You need to pass the first time out! Don't be surprised if both departments send you to the same psych doctor. Check here for more information on the psych:

BTW,

I did your gold package (book, video, etc) and the book was great--Both orals had those questions on them. Thanks for that, though I never did see the psych report.

Thanks again--

Thank you for your kind words. The Psych Report is incorporated as part of the new book. Check the contents. It begins on page 119.
