o.k. i am currently takeing fire science courses at a community college. the thing is........i live in hawaii and testing is only held every three years and theres about 3000 people who show up to take the test. only a couple of hundred positions are open at best. your score has to be PERFECT due to the competition. is it easier to become a firefighter in the mainland. this is my dream and and im going to keep trying until it becomes a reality.

Aloha:
Aren't most Hawaii Counties (Islands) hiring medics???? I know Kauai does not, they aren't even EMT's. It also has a lot to do with the locals being hired.
We helped two medic buddies from Oahu get hired on the big island of Hawaii on the last test.

Me thinks our new colleague will earn some frequent flyer miles traveling to the mainland for testing! Have you ever thought about where else you might like to live & work? Capt Bob has said before that if you're really serious about this, you probably wouldn't turn down a badge just because of where it is. Pursue a dozen or more departments, perhaps limiting it to the 7 or 8 westernmost states if traveling back & forth to Hawaii is something you will want to do. Best of luck!

The most popular destination for Hawaiians is, yes you guessed it, Las Vegas! Aloha Airlines (they give discounts to locals) flys into Oakland everyday. The plane then makes a round trip to Las Vegas before flying back the next day. They probably do the same thing through Los Angeles.

Hey Guys,
When you talk about taking tests in different parts of the country, how do you get by the rules that some depts. want you to live inside city lines.
Say for instance Boston, it says you have to be a city resident for a year to be able to take the test.
Are most depts. like this or is it by the time you become a member you have to be a city resident?

Few departments require residency to test like Boston. Some give extra points if you live in the city like NYC. You can only get hired in the state of Florida if you have been certified by their system.
Before San Francisco dropped their residency requirement, 12 applicants listed the same address as living in SF. When they went to check it out, there was a Vietnamese family or 6 living in the studio apartment. The candidates had paid them to use the address. Sorry, declined.
